Doar wins Fox Ridge Late Models

ARCADIA, Wis. (Oct. 5, 2002) - Pat Doar won the $3,000 to win late model feature Saturday night at the Fox Ridge Speedway by passing Chad Cummings at the halfway point of the 35 lap main event. Doar came into the event in a must win situation.

Doar trailed South Dakota driver Curt Gelling in the much sought after Wissota national late model standings by six points at the start of the evening. Doar's win pulled him within two points of Gelling with only one race left on the Wissota circuit.

Chad Cummings jumped out to the lead in the feature and led the early going. The sixth starting Doar laid back in the early stages of the race as Cummings and Brady Smith fought for the lead. A lap ten caution put Doar back in striking range and the veteran late model standout capitalized on the restart.

Running fifth, Doar blasted from his outside row three restart and surged past Jon Kurshinsky and Smith. Doar sailed by John Kaanta on lap 16 and two laps later took the lead from Cummings. Kaanta took control of the runnerup spot on lap 26 but was unable to track Doar down over the remainder of the event.

Kaanta held the second spot at the checkered with Cummings third. Brady Smith came across the line fourth and 16th starting Brad Waits was fifth. Cummings failed post race inspection when his car was declared under the weight minimum. Cummings disqualification moved Smith and Waits up one spot and Tony Bahr was awarded fifth.

New London, Minn. modified driver Craig Christenson made his first trip to the speedway a memorable one by winning the rain shortened Wissota modified feature.

Christenson trailed national points champion Craig Thatcher for the first six laps until Thatcher cut a rear tire and retired to the pits. Christenson then fought off advances from Ron Mahder and Danny Thomas. Thomas in his first appearance in a modified at the track passed Mahder on lap 13 but was unable to mount a challenge for the lead.

Christenson dominated the event until the race was stopped on lap 22 when a cloudburst cancelled racing action. Tony Bahr finished third behind Thomas, with 16th starting Dave Cain fourth and Les Duellman behind the wheel of Todd Blaeser's modified fifth.

Another newcomer to the speedway, Scott Clark captured the Wissota street stock feature. Clark took the lead from Rick Hanestad on lap 13 and held off a hard charging Mike Prochnow throughout the last seven laps.

Shawn Wehlage led the first lap of the feature beating Hanestad off the line. Wehlage's lead was short lived as he lost a wheel on lap two bringing out the first caution. Track champ Travis Krause took the point and led lap two. Krause's luck was no better than Wehlage's as he lost a rear wheel on lap four. The incident put Krause on two wheels before coming to a rest in turn four.

Hanestad now had the point and led the next nine laps while Clark and Scott Paulson mixed it up behind him. The sixth starting Clark passed Hanestad on lap 14. Prochnow passed Hanestas on lap 16 and set his sights on Clark. Clark held off Prochnow over the next four laps to score the win. Prochnow, Hanestad, Paulson and Dan Gullickson rounded out the top five. Alma's Danny Hanson had a valiant effort as he charged to sixth after starting 17th in the field.

Mark Anderson made the long haul from Aitken, Minn. pay off for him in the Wissota Midwest modified feature by leading all 20 laps to gain the win. Anderson sat on the pole and led all 20 laps. National points champion Neil Eckhart was able close ground on Anderson toward the end of the feature and almost pulled off the win.

Eckhart made a last lap charge and came up just short. Eckhart blasted off the cushion on turn four and came up one car length short of pulling off the win. Behind Anderson and Eckhart were Jerry Young, Dick Peterson, and Dan Fagerlind.

Features in the open modified class and Wissota super stocks were cancelled when a second cloudburst at 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning brought a sudden end to the evening's racing. The program had had been delayed for two hours after a shower at 7:30 p.m.

Racing resumed at 9:30 as track promoters worked feverishly to prep the track.

A track record 248 cars checked throught the gate. Spectators witnessed 38 races and three spectacular crashes. Rookie Cody Grosskreutz demolished his late model in a wild crash after making contact with the backstretch wall. Grosskreutz barrel rolled five times before landing on his roof. Grosskreutz was uninjured in the crash. Jack Larson's superstock was also a victim of the backstretch wall as he flipped over the top of Dan Nissalke in their heat race. Tom McEldowney was the third victim of the wall as he barrel rolled his mount in a street stock heat.
