Hesch takes 2nd win
ARCADIA, Wis. (Sept. 7, 2002) - Shawn Wehlage, Bill Clemoms, and Dan Hesch all picked up feature wins in racing action Saturday night at the Fox Ridge Speedway.
The number two was synonymous with all three feature winners.
Wehlage gained his second straight street stock feature win at the speedway. Wehlage squeezed past front row starters Tom Hund and Jon Laumb on the opening lap of the 15 lap main. Wehlage dove under Hund in turn one and pulled away going down the back chute.
Wehlage stretched his lead during the early portion of the race while third row starters Danny Hanson and Greg Erickson battled to the front. Hanson took over the third spot on lap five. Hanson's run would end on lap seven when the Alma driver lost a wheel exiting turn four.
Wehlage led the restart, the third running Erickson now had his hands with the visiting Jason Forehand. On lap eleven, the two drivers would get together racing into turn four causing Forehand to spin. Both drivers were ruled at fault and sent to the back of the field.
The incident put track champion Travis Krause within striking distance of Wehlage.
The third place Krause had difficulty negotiating traffic early in the race. Krause disposed of Laumb but was unable to catch Wehlage. Laumb finished third with Daryl Foegen and Matt Theisen rounding out the top five.
Bill Clemons grabbed the feature win in the super stock class. Clemons was making just his second start of the season at the speedway. The Chatfield, Minn. driver started on the front row with Kevin Adams. The two speedsters were disposed of by Ben Anderson on the start as Anderson snuck under both.
Anderson led the next two laps when a nasty accident involving Jesse Hanson and Jon Duffy occurred. Hanson got turned around in turn one and rolled down the track backwards, Duffy tried to avoid Hanson by ducking to the bottom. The rear of Hanson's car struck Duffy in the passenger door. The accident took a turn for the worse when Duffy tried to refire his race car igniting the race fuel from Hanson's wrecked race car. Both drivers managed to escape the blaze and no injuries were reported.
Anderson restarted the race and led until lap nine. Clemons pulled alongside on lap nine and the two drivers battled side by side down the back straight. Clemons completed the pass in turn four and went on to the win. Several times Anderson pulled close to
Clemons in the late stages, only for Clemons to pull away. Troy Brand picked up third with Dan Nissalke and Rod Dregney placing fourth and fifth.
Dan Hesch followed up on the deuce theme for the evening by gaining his second feature win of the season in the open modified class. The sixth starting Hesch benefited from a lap two accident that took out Paul Hammernik, Mick Glenn, and Bobby Sorenson. The drivers ran three abreast into turn four. Hammernik got squeezed in the middle and ran over the top of Sorenson's front tire sending the veteran Winona driver into a spin.
Glenn took fault for the accident while Hammernik retired to the pits for repair. Sorenson claimed the pole on the restart, and led briefly before Hesch took control of the race on lap three. Sorenson stayed within striking distance of Hesch for the duration of the race but was unable to muster any momentum to make a pass. Eleventh starting Steve Wetzstein worked his way up to third, Karl Fenske was fourth and Leroy Sharkey fifth.
News and Notes: The unsanctioned Wissota modified class was cancelled due to lack of entries. Racing action resumes at the speedway October 4th and 5th. In addition to the four normally featured classes at the speedway, the Wissota modifieds and Wissota Midwest modifieds will be in action. Last years event drew in access of 200 racers. The Wissota 100 will start Wednesday at the Cedar Lake Speedway, Somerset, Wis. and run through Saturday. One week later, the Fall Jamboree will kick off at the Deer Creek Speedway, Spring Valley, Minn. Action is slated for Sept. 19-21 with USMTS modifieds battling for over $12,000 to win in the three nights. Wissota super stocks will get double duty with the chance to win $1,000 and $1,500 to separate features on the 20th and 21st.
Super stock ace Mark Teske is out of action after breaking his femur in an accident at home. The Winona community lost an avid race supporter when Bill Angst passed away this week.
