Durnen drives to first career Super Stock win
ARCADIA, Wis. (Aug. 30, 2002) - Matt Durnen out dueled Adam Stockhausen in a wild super stock feature to pick up his first career win in racing action at the Fox Ridge Speedway, Friday night.
The feature started inauspiciously when an opening lap melee involving seven cars slowed the the start. The altercation started when Jon Duffy tapped the rear of Mark Stender. Stender's spin in front of the field ended the evening for Jeff Hofer, Dan Nissalke, and Dan Arneson.
Duffy took control of the lead on the restart while youngster Ben Anderson trailed the Winona veteran driver. Anderson charged past Duffy on lap five with a turn four pass. Anderson then pulled away over the next two laps until an unwelcome blaze from underneath his mount brought out the caution. The fire ended Anderson's night and put Duffy back on the point.
Duffy led Durnen and Adam Stockhausen on the second restart. Durnen chased Duffy for the next four laps taking the lead on lap eleven. Two lap later, Stockhausen made his way past Duffy and began pursuit of Durnen. The 16th starting Stockhausen closed on Durnen and attempted a turn four pass on lap 16. Durnen shut the door on Stockhausen with an inside block. Several times over the last three laps, Stockhausen looked for an opening but each time Durnen was able to hold him off.
"I knew he was there at the end of the race and I just moved down on the track a little to take away his groove", said Durnen. "It feels really good to finally get a win here. We haven't had very good luck here this season."
Stockhausen was pleased with his second place finish after encountering engine trouble during his heat. "We put the motor back together and didn't know how long it would last. We could get close to him(Durnen) in the corner but he'd pull away in the middle of the track. He moved down to block me, but I'd have done the same thing if I was leading."
Quinn Arnoldy, Jon Duffy, and Troy Brand rounded out the top five. Brand actually finished third but was penalized two spots for jumping a restart.
Leroy Sharkey notched the win in the modified feature. Sharkey's pass in turn four of leader Mick Glenn on lap nine put the Rochester speedster in control of the race. Hank Rollinger's spin in turn four on lap 15 closed the field, but Sharkey was able pull away to a safe margin. Steve Speltz made an exciting last lap pass at the finish line to grab second away from Glenn. Karl Fenske charged from near the rear of the field to finish fourth. Troy Langowski had another solid run placing fifth.
Shawn Wehlage took advantage of Jeremy Sommer's misfortune to pick up the street stock feature win. Wehlage advanced to Sommer's front row starting spot when Sommer was unable to answer the call for the feature start.
Wehlage jumped out to the lead while season point champion Travis Krause rallied to catch the Stockton driver. Wehlage led green to checkered in the 15 lap feature which ran off without incident. Krause was unable to reel Wehlage in had to settle for second place. Dennis Davis had a season high third place finish while Matt Theisen and Fred Prudoehl battled it out for fourth and fifth. Theisen held off Prudoehl togain the four spot. Racing resumes next Saturday night.
