Wehlage wins first at Fox Ridge
Shawn Wehlage has flirted with destiny for the last year and a half at the Fox Ridge Speedway. Friday night he finally fulfilled that destiny by capturing the street stock feature.
Wehlage capitalized on an excellent draw for the main event. In the past, the Stockton youngster has been prone to poor redraws for the feature events. Friday night Wehlage grabbed the one ball and started on the pole for the 15 lap feature.
Wehlage utilized that starting position to jump out to an early lead in the street stock main. Brad Dennis and Danny Hanson battled it out for the runner-up honors as points leader Travis Krause fought his way up from 12th.
A lap 4 caution for an accident involving Nathan Rauter and Tom Brink closed the field. Wehlage pulled away on the restart, Krause moved from fourth to second on lap eight and began his pursuit of Wehlage.
Wehlage held off the defending track champion throughout the remainder of the event to gain his first win at Fox Ridge. The battle for third featured a three car shootout among Dennis, Hanson, And Randy Bradford. The threesome raced hard for the first ten laps swapping position. Jeremy Sommer entered the fracas with five to go and eventually passed all three for the show spot.
Wehlage beat Krause to the line by five car lengths with Sommer third. Bradford bested Dennis for fourth, Hanson ended up sixth.
“We finally got a chance to start up front,” said Wehlage. “All year we’ve lined up behind those guys, tonight we were in front of them. Our luck hasn’t been very good here but we finally got a win here. It’s been a long time coming,” Wehlage said
Although starting in the front row benefited Wehlage, he wasn’t exactly keen on the start spot. “Starting up front always makes me feel like a sitting duck, you never know who’s behind you or where they’re coming from.” The win was the Stockton drivers first career feature win at the track..
Mark Teske has his sights set on the Wissota super stock national championship. The Spring Valley, Minn. driver pulled a little closer to national points leader Kevin Adams with a feature win in the super stock class.
Jon Duffy led the first seven laps of the main when Jason Johnson slipped by on lap eight. Johnson held on to the lead for the next five laps as Teske steadily progressed through the field from his fourth row starting position. Teske replaced Johnson at the point on lap 13 and waited for the arrival of Shawn Huse.
Huse is the dry-slick expert of the super stock class. Huse started 12th and joined the top five on lap ten. Huse was second by lap 15 and over the next five laps challenged Teske several times on the bottom groove. Huse looked to have momentarily passed Teske in turn three on the final lap but Teske powered off the cushion and beat Huse by a car length.
The win was the second straight for Teske at the track. Huse was followed by Johnson, Gary Wiersgalla, and Mark Wytaske.
Les Duellman notched his second straight feature win in the modified division. Shane Wehrs led the early laps of the main. The caution was dropped when Karl Fenske became hooked to the bumper of Troy Langowski’s car. Wehrs led the restart but was passed by Duellman racing through turn two. Duellman dominated the race from the point.
Fenske drew out to a comfortable margin for second while Wehrs, Langowksi, and John Doelle dueled for the three spot. Wehrs was able to hold off his challengers for his best finish of the season. Langowski finished fourth and Doelle was fifth.
The racing Kouba family notched three of the top five spots in Friday’s sprint car action.
Joe Kouba held off two rivals to gain the win in the Wissota Sprint Car feature. Kouba held off the advances of Jimmy Kouba through the mid portion of the race. A lap 18 spin by Johnny Parson III brought out the yellow.
Kouba blazed out to the lead on the restart, third running Kurt Davis blasted around Jimmy Kouba and began to gain ground on Joe Kouba. Davis pressured Kouba going into turn four on the last lap. Kouba withstood Davis’ challenge to pick up the win in the 25 lap main event. Roger Rager followed in third with Jimmy Kouba and Joseph Kouba rounding out the top five.
