Fagerlind comes out on top at DCS
KASSON, Minn. (Aug. 25, 2002) - It was a beautiful evning for racing once again at the Dodge County Speedway on Sunday night. And with some very stout drivers on hand in all four divisions, it was a sure bet that there would be some excellent racing to come.
The first feature event of the evening was the WISSOTA Street Stock main event, which found Greg Erickson and Greg Wright sharing row one. Erickson led lap one, but Jim Gullikson bolted from his fifth starting position to take the lead on lap two. Dan Gullikson was up to fourth after starting eighth, while Jeff Brauer challenged Erickson for second. Arlen Diercks also entered the top five in the early laps.
The first caution came on lap eight when Troy Bents spun in turn four. Jim Gullikson led Brauer and Dan Gullikson on the restart, and going into three, Brauer leaned on Jim Gullikson and in doing so, opened up the bottom groove to take the lead. Dan Gullikson also passed Jim Gullikson to take over second, and a heated battle for the lead broke out between Dan Gullikson and Brauer. Coming off of turn four, Dan Gullikson tried to go by on the bottom, but Brauer tried to shut the door and it resulted in Jim Gullikson taking over the lead again and Dan Gullikson in second, with Brauer in the infield, done for the night. The yellow flag would wave for the incident, and on the restart Jim Gullikson led Dan Gullikson, and Diercks to the cone.
Dan Gullikson took the lead from brother Jim Gullikson with two laps remaining, and Diercks would also try to get by Jim Gullikson but to no avail. Dan Gullikson held on for the win followed by Jim Gullikson, Diercks, Vince Corbin, and Greg Erickson rounding out the top five.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were up next and it would be Tony Angrimson and Justin Hainka pacing the field. The opening lap would see a huge pile-up on the backstretch involving seven cars, including those of Kenny Wytaske, Carter Gerlach, Joe Wernecke, Ryan Weber, Dane Schultz, Justin Hainka, and Neil Eckhart. With most not being able to continue, and the number of cars taking the green was considerably smaller.
When the green flag flew, Dan Fagerlind took the lead followed by Harland Morehart Jr. and Matt Stark. Jesse Frericks challenged Stark for third and would take the position. Bryan Hernandez was up to fourth, and Frericks continued to march forward taking over second one lap later. Hernandez inherited third and Stark fourth, when Morehart bobbled losing a few spots.
Frericks then caught Fagerlind and started to challenge for the lead, while Hernandez stepped into the picture to make it a three car battle for the lead. This would go on for quite a few laps, going three wide, and looking like it could be anyone's race. But in the end, Fagerlind came out on top followed by Frericks, Hernandez, Morehart Jr., and Stark.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks took to the track next and on the front row would be Mark Teske and Brandon Jensen. Teske jumped out front followed by Jensen, and Mark Wytaske. Jensen looked very fast on the top, with Wytaske looking equally as fast in the middle groove, giving Jensen all he could handle for second.
The first caution came when John Taggart Sr. spun in turn two, and this would be the first of nine cautions in the 20 lap feature that was shortened to 15 laps.
After a lot of difficulties getting the ball rolling, with one caution after another, some of the changes of position involved Mark Wytaske passing Jensen for second and Bill Clemens starting to pick off a number of positions. Clemens came up to challenge Teske for the lead and would spin out in turn four, while racing hard for the lead.
Other than that, it was smooth sailing for Teske picking up yet another feature win in a stellar season, adding to his National Point lead. Nick Herrick came home second followed by Dustin Nelson, Kevin Hager, and Bill Stettner rounding out the top five.
The Modifieds would come out to be the fourth and final event of the evening, with Todd Scharkey and Nate Wasmund sharing row one. Todd Scharkey grabbed the early lead, while Jay Ihrke took over second. Todd Klees came from outside of the third row to challenge Ihrke for second early on. Steve Wetzstein and Wasmund would engage in a battle for fourth, with the position going to Wetzstein.
The first caution came when Mike Mehling got sideways off of turn four, collecting Jim Arnold in the process. After going back to green, a lap would not be completed and the caution would wave again, this time for Jim Arnold spinning in turn four. When racing resumed Ihrke looked to the outside of Todd Scharkey for the lead, and would go to the bottom in three and four to take the lead.
Wetzstein was starting to apply pressure to Klees for third and shortly after completing the pass, Klees would go around on his own to bring out the caution. Nate Wasmund with nowhere to go, was also involved in the incident. After the restart, Mike Sorenson was making a charge to the front and had worked his way up to second, but Ihrke still looked strong out front. The final caution came when Leroy Scharkey spun in to the infield in turn four. Once underway again, Nathan Kilwine made the pass on Wetzstein to take over fourth, and on the next lap, Wetzstein would reverse the move taking over fourth once again. But on the white flag lap, Kilwine was able to once again pass Wetzstein to finish fourth.
Ihrke turned in a dominating performance to pick up the win followed by Sorenson, Todd Scharkey, Kilwine, and Wetzstein.
Overall, another great night of racing at the Dodge County Speedway. The next event on the schedule is set for September 1st with racing at 6:00 pm. On hand will be the USMTS Modifieds and the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, and Street Stocks.
