Timm Scores Double Duty Sweep at DCS
by Bob Peine
KASSON, MN (August 11, 2002) - With weather cooperating for the second straight week there was some exciting racing in all five division on Sunday night at the Dodge County Speedway.
In WISSOTA Street Stock competition Dan Gullikson and Dan Seeverson shared row one and it was Dan Gullikson leading the first lap followed by Trevor Krause and Chuck Nerland. The first caution came when Arlen Diercks was spun off of turn four and Seeverson was charged with the incident and sent to the tail of the field.
On the restart, Gullikson lead the field to the cone followed by Krause, Nerland, Brauer, and Diercks. Brauer moved around Nerland to take over third while Jim Gullikson challenged Diercks for fifth. The next caution came when Seeverson spun and was again sent to the tail of the field. On the restart, Diercks made a powerful move past Nerland and Brauer to move into third. Brauer fought back and not only passed Diercks for third but also went by Krause to move into second.
Diercks was putting some heavy pressure on Krause for third but ran out of time and would have to settle for fourth. Gullikson picked up the win followed by Brauer, Krause, Diercks, and Nerland.
Next up, were the Midwest Modifieds and it would be Tony Angrimson and Matt Stark pacing the field. The initial start didn't go as Brian Hernandez had trouble getting up to speed and after a complete restart, the second attempt also failed as Carter Gerlach and Dan Fagerlind got together in turn two.
When racing got underway, Angrimson took the early lead but the man to watch was Kenny Wytaske as he stormed to the front. Wytaske took the lead on lap two and immediately started to run away from the field. Ryan Weber moved to second and the next caution came when Gary Wilde spun in turns three and four.
Gerlach was getting some momentum going on the top but a bobble cost him a number of positions and he would be forced to try to work his way back to the front. Neil Eckhart moved into second followed by Albert Wytaske who took over third. Chad Herman also picked up a couple of positions to reach as high as third, but Albert Wytaske would soon regain the postion.
Out front, Kenny Wytaske held a huge advantage and would also hold on to pick up the feature win followed by Eckhart, Albert Wytaske, Herman, and Nick Kramer.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks took to the track next, and in a lengthy survival of the fittest type race, only the strong would survive. Dave Solum and Todd Rizer led the field to the green and it would take quite a few attempts to get a smooth start, but once underway it was Solum out front with a hard charging Dustin Nelson looking for a way around him.
After numerous cautions, and a lot of cars eliminated from competition, it looked like Nelson was the car to beat and Mark Teske seemed to be up for the challenge. Nelson was using the bottom of the track while Teske tried numerous lines from the middle to the top and started to close the gap on Nelson.
Nelson didn't make any mistakes and drove a great race to hold off the current WISSOTA National point leader to cruise to the victory. Teske came home second, followed by Solum, Butch Butcher, and Dave Haberman rounding out the top five.
The Modifieds rolled out next and Bob Timm was looking for his fourth feature win of the weekend after scoring two victories last night and one on Friday night. Timm started on the pole along side Chad Behne and would use the front row starting postion to his every advantage grabbing the lead early.
Todd Scharkey tucked into second followed by Behne. Tim Donlinger shot past Behne to take over third while Scharkey applied some pressure to Timm for the lead. The first caution came when Darwyn Karu and Mike Mehling got together in turns three and four. On the restart, it was Timm, Scharkey, Donlinger, Behne, and Steve Wetzstein making up the top five.
Another caution would follow soon after as Mehling and Nate Wasmund got together in turns one and two. On the next restart, Tommy Myer got by Wetzstein to take over fifth and Donlinger got by Scharkey to take over second. The next caution came when Mehling and Russ Quinnell tangeld in turns three and four. When racing resumed, Tommy Myer advanced to fourth and again the action would be slowed as Dean Riess spun in turns three and four.
On the restart, it was still Timm in the lead followed by Donlinger, Scharkey, Myer, and Mike Sorenson. The final caution came after the restart when Behne and Wetzstein ended up against the concrete in turn three and Behne would be charged with the incident and sent to the tail of the field. Also under the caution the third place car of Todd Scharkey would retire to the pit area putting Myer in third.
Steve Wetzstein went to the top when the green flag waved to move around Sorenson to take over fourth while Donlinger pulled side by side with Timm a few times exiting turn four but Timm stayed strong and scored his fourth feature win of the weekend. Donlinger finished a strong second, followed by Myer, Wetzstein, and Sorenson.
The final event of the evening was the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Bob Timm had a chance to pick up his second feature win of the night and the fifth of the weekend. The chances looked good for Timm as he would start outside of the first row along side Jon Van Minsel.
Van Minsel shot out front to grab the lead but a spin by Mark Teske on the opening lap would require a complete restart. On the next start, Timm grabbed the lead and Jon Chrest fell into second followed by Van Minsel.
Lance Matthees got around Van Minsel for third while Brad Waits and Ben Mattick battled for fifth. Waits would come out on top to secure the position while ahead of them, Van Minsel went to the top side and passed Matthees to reclaim the third position. Van Minsel then put some pressure on Chrest for second and after seeing the line Van Minsel was running, Matthees also moved up a groove.
Van Minsel was able to complete the pass on Chrest and Matthees also pulled to the outside of Chrest and would move into third. Timm had pulled out to a straightaway advantage and was on his way to his fifth feature win of the weekend. Matthees was able to get by Van Minsel for second and rounding out the top five were Van Minsel, Chrest, and Brad Waits.
The next scheduled event at the Dodge County Speedway is on Tuesday August 13th, at 7:00 pm featuring USMTS Modifieds along with WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. For more information, please call 507-775-7091 or visit our website at www.dodgecountyspeedway.com.
