Kennedy, Chaney use late-race heroics to score I-90 Speedway wins
HARTFORD, S.D. -- Dave Kennedy made it two in a row in the USRA B-Mods Saturday night at the I-90 Speedway. Unfortunately, the race was cut to only six laps after several cautions put the event over the track's time limit.
An opening lap incident involving Tyler Tesch, Kevin Joachim and Connor Vande Weerd took out the Joachim and Vande Weerd cars. Seven of the starting 18 cars were gone by the fourth lap.
Tim Dann started on the pole and led the first four laps before the green-white-checkered announcement was made. Dann led the first of the two laps but mismanaged the fourth turn on the final lap.
Dave Kennedy, a sixth row starter and beneficiary of attrition, slipped underneath Dann in the final corner to chalk up his second win in as many weeks. Dann hung on for second while Mitch Van Engen took third after starting tail-end.
A nice field of 20 USRA Hobby Stocks gifted the wind-weary fans with a great 12 lap feature.
Travis Vanden Top made good use of the pole by leading the first 10 laps. Much like opening night, several cars had a chance to take the top spot. Mike Chaney hounded Vanden Top for much of the feature and finally got by the leader on lap 11.
Chaney led the final two circuits for his first win. Week one winner Tim Waltner came from the sixth row for an impressive second. Vanden Top settled for third and Brian Hoing had another outstanding run in finishing fourth.
All five divisions race this Saturday night at 7 p.m. Hot laps begin at 6:30.
The I-90 Speedway is located just 2.5 miles west of Hartford, S.D., on Hwy. 38. For more information log onto www.i90speedway.com or check out I-90 Speedway on Facebook.
