FORT DODGE, Iowa -- The Mineral City Speedway in Fort Dodge, Iowa, wrapped up the 2012 season Friday night by hosting the 8th Annual Bruce Sommerfeld Memorial with 110 cars and drivers signed in to do battle.

For the Industrial Material Surplus Iron Man Challenge, it was also the final event of the year with two new champions emerging from the finale in two completely different fashions.

Nineteen USRA A-Mods were on hand Friday night with Denison’s Shane Demey leading wire to wire to pocket the $600 top prize and score his first USRA-sanctioned victory over a stout field of competition.

Clayton Christensen of Spencer followed Demey across the finish line in second with Brad Williams of Lytton coming home third. Craig Reetz of Dunlap charged from 12th on the starting to fourth at the checkered flag while Devon Havlik of Iowa Falls rounded out the top 5.

To the crowd’s delight, J.J. Wise of Manly registered a sixth-place finish in his first time back behind the wheel since an on-track incident nearly two months ago when he was hit in the face by a clump of mud with a rock in the middle during the Modified feature at I-35 Speedway in Mason City.

Wise fractured an eye socket and broke both cheek bones, his nasal bone and his upper jaw in the accident, but said that being back in the cockpit was good therapy.

“Once that green flag dropped, it was like nothing had changed,” Wise said. “I really wasn’t supposed to be ready to race for another three weeks, but I felt good and we wanted to get some things worked out on the car.”

In USRA Stock Car action, Tom Schmitt did what he had: win. Holding a slim lead over Kyle Falck in the Industrial Material Surplus Iron Man Challenge points standings, Schmitt blasted his way from the third starting spot to take the win and $600 paycheck.

More importantly for the two-time USRA Stock Car national champion from Independence, the win turned out to be the deciding factor in the Iron Man title chase. After finishing fourth in the main event, Falck found himself tied atop the final standings with Schmitt, but the crown tilted in Schmitt’s favor due to the first tie-breaker of most wins. After Friday, Schmitt had two and Falck had one.

Lynn Panos of Calmar claimed the runner-up spot for the fourth time during the 2012 Iron Man campaign. Churdan’s Jason Minnehan finished third ahead of Falck while defending USRA Stock Car national champion Mitch Hovden of Decorah rounded out the top 5 finishers.

Jared Timmerman of Norwalk came into the night ranked second in the Iron Man standings for the USRA B-Mods, but even a $500 victory Friday night was not enough to wrestle the championship away from Trevor Hunt despite the 13-year old from Liberty, Mo., missing the last five events.

Trevor Fecht of Allison followed Timmerman to the finish line Friday night with Tim Rupp of Cherokee, Tyler Droste of Waterloo and former USRA tech director Jason Mallicoat of Jefferson rounding out the top 5.

Brandon Nielsen of Spencer led every lap of the USRA Hobby Stock main event to earn a $400 payday. He was followed to the checkered flag by Dillon Anderson of Rudd, Bill Richards of Audubon, 21st-starting Austin Wolfgram of Webster City and 2012 Mineral City Speedway track champion Myles Michehl of Fort Dodge.

With the curtain closed on the 2012 racing season, information about the 2013 racing season at the Mineral City Speedway will be coming soon.
