Morton scores Lucas Oil Speedway checkers

J.C. Morton won the USRA B-Mod main evnet.
WHEATLAND, MO. (May 3, 2025)—J.C. Morton had a night to remember Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway, capturing victories in both the USRA B-Mod and Hermitage Lumber Late Model divisions.
Morton's rare feat came on on Ozarks Coca-Cola/Dr Pepper Night. The Springfield driver took home a rather comfortable triumph a little earlier.
Other feature winners were Kyle Slader and Jesse Stovall (USRA Modifieds), and Mason Beck (USRA Stock Cars).
The reigning track champion in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods, Morton is proving he’s the man to beat again. Morton led all 20 laps for claim the feature win by nearly two seconds over Jon Sheets.
Morton roared to the lead from his front-row inside starting spot and had a two-second lead over third-starting Sheets when the leaders caught lapped traffic on lap nine.
As the green-flag laps continued to click by, Morton’s margin peaked at 2.9 seconds on lap 17 as he kept picking off slower cars without a hitch. Sheets was unable to make much of a dent over the final three laps and settled for second.
Morton said his first USRA B-Mod feature win of the season was special as it was also his first in the car since his dad, Gene, passed away in January. Gene also was his long-time crew chief and a close friend of the Bloodline Race Cars owner and designer Terry Phillips.
"Man, it's huge," an emotional Morton said in victory lane, noting how he lost his dad shortly after the first of the year.
"I lost my dad back in January. Just emotional. I have to thank Yeoman Race Engines and Bloodlines Race Cars. 'T.P.' has worked with me all week trying some different stuff and I think we finally hit on something."
J.C. Newell finished third with Trevor Drake fourth and Robbe Ewing fifth. The win gave Morton the early season points lead.
Slader wires USRA Modified field: Kyle Slader of Muskogee, Okla., dominated from flag-to-flag, leading all 20 laps in the caution-free Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified feature.
Slader led fellow front-row starter Bidinger in the early going, with a 1.5-second margin five laps in. Even as he caught lapped traffic by lap 10, Slader continued to widen his lead and was 2.5 seconds clear of Bidinger with Jesse Stovall in third.
Bidinger cut the gap under two seconds with four to go, but that’s when Slader got back at full steam. He went on to beat Stovall by 3.8 seconds with Shadren Turner third, Bidinger fading to fourth and Chase Sigg fifth.
"I started on the pole and had a clean race track until we got into lapped traffic," Slader said. "I moved around a little bit before I got into lapped traffic to know what the car was gonna do in different lanes. This is the third night out on this car and we've got a second and two wins, so it's going pretty good so far."
Stovall mops up in USRA Modified makeup: Jesse Stovall had to wait a week, but he led all 20 laps to win the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified make-up feature rained out on April 26. The race kicked off the night's program.
Stovall started up front and stayed there, rolling to a two-second lead over Dustin Hodges seven laps into the race. Bobby Williams advanced around Hodges on lap 10 for second as the leaders navigated lapped cars.
The caution-free 20-lapper saw Stovall hold on to beat a fast-closing Williams by just .447 seconds as the runner-up made a big run on the final two laps.
"It's always good to win in the day time. I'm usually not very good when the sun's up for some reason," Stovall said. "I was kind of losing some brakes near the end."
Hodges finished third with Jason Pursley fourth and Chad Lyle fifth.
USRA Stock Car win goes to Beck: Mason Beck of Urbana took the lead from William Garner with four laps to go and captured the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature win.
Garner, the defending track champ in the division with four feature wins in 2024, rolled to a two-second lead over Beck after just five laps. He appeared on his way to a relatively lopsided win when his 2.4-second lead went away with a lap 10 caution.
That gave new life to Beck’s chances and he drew alongside Garner and made the pass on lap 16. Beck drove away from there to beat Garner by .598 seconds with Dawson Fennewald third.
“I'm lucky I got that restart. I would never have beat Will. He was just too far out front," Beck, the 2023 track champ, said after his first win of the season. "I just glad to get back here. We broke a lot of stuff last year. It feels good to win again."
