Schiffelbein snags second straight at Humboldt

Randal Schiffelbein Jr. won the USRA Modified main event.

Randal Schiffelbein Jr. won the USRA Modified main event.

Saturday night was a repeat for Randal Schiffelbein Jr., as he capped the weekend with his second USRA Heartland Modified tour victory in as many days at Humboldt Speedway.

Redrawing the pole at intermission, Schiffelbein fell to second at the start of the race. Tyler Davis led the first five laps before Schiffelbein narrowly edged him out for the top spot.

Schiffelbein never gave up the lead, however it really tightened up with five laps to go. Shadren Turner closed in on the lead, and coming to the Hochatown Saloon Last Call, there were lapped cars directly in front of Schiffelbein.

Turner jumped up a couple lanes and Davis pulled to Schiffelbein's bumper. Entering turn three, Davis split the two and drove to high line in the middle of turns three and four. Turner, a lane lower, had enough steam to narrowly edge Davis at the VP Racing Fuels Checkers for the runner-up spot.

While the action was intense behind the leader, turns three and four was smooth sailing for Schiffelbein.

“Humboldt has always had a special place for me, racing and growing up, to just do two in a row is crazy,” Schiffelbein said in Victory Lane. “I had to putt-putt around the bottom again, but it got the job done.

"It's crazy, this thing is fast. In the heat race we were good, stuff happens, a guy spun out. We got clobbered. We welded a bumper on just to have a bumper. The right side frame horn is bent. This thing is gonna have to go to the frame machine.”

For Turner and his team, a second straight second-place finish has them in high spirits headed into next weekend's USMTS King of America XIV at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Davis' third is his best finish of the weekend. He was the overall fast qualifier early on in Deatherage Racing Opticians Time Trials, laying down a blistering fast lap of 15.759 seconds.

Saturday’s heat race winners included Davis, Henry Chambers, Schiffelbein and Jason Pursley.

This weekend’s events were contested as a tribute and thank you to the Whitworth family. During their long and extremely successful time as the owners of the track, it experienced explosive growth and the appreciation of everyone who had the pleasure of standing on the grounds, be it racer or fan. Several former track employees were also on hand throughout the event.

The next two weekends are off for the HMT before heading to Electric City Speedway and I-35 Speedway, both in Missouri. Later on in the summer there will be a return to Humboldt on Friday, Aug. 15.
