Elliott grabs Big Bud Shootout victory

BRITT, Iowa (August 9, 2002) - Unforgettable.

Fans and drivers will remember August 9 at the Hancock County Speedway. It could be the caution filled features, the first ever victory for Rick Schuller in the Mod class or Mark Elliott's, start-from-the-back win in the Big Bud Shootout.

Let's not forget the marriage proposal on the front stretch between features or the fireworks that lit up the dark night.

Mark Elliott of Webster City added another victory and another title to his list of accomplishments late Friday night as he collected the Big Bud Shootout win.

Elliott, who qualified for the Big Bud Shootout after placing second in a cash dash earlier in the season, drew the No. 13 position, the lonely back row.

Elliott did not stay there long as he ventured forward through the pack of cars hungry for the $1,000 top spot. Rob Hughes of Humboldt, who took the pole position, held Elliott off until lap 23 when Elliott slid into the winning lane for the money and bragging rights.

Hughes followed Elliott across the finish line followed by Todd Foster of Webster City and Travis Hoeft of Forest City. Jeff Dolphin of Forest City finished fifth.

Kevin Hoeft of Garner accepted his I.M.C.A Stock Car trophy in victory lane after the feature race, holding off Rob Hughes and Ryan Watnem, both of Humboldt.

In the Modified class, Rick Schuller of Burt picked up his first-ever feature win after leading 25 laps in the caution filled event.

Schuller didn't let the nine yellows thrown during the race bother him or his racing abilities as he soared into victory lane over Denny Stoneburner of Boone and Todd Stinehart of Waseca, Minn. Keith Schmitz finished fourth.

Ed Green of Algona continued to shine in the No. 02 Limited 360 Modified car as he pursued his 25th season victory. Scott Manske of Algona had other plans for Green as he took the checkered while Green settled for second. Jake Simpson rounded out the top three for an Algona sweep in the Limited 360 Modified class.

Roger Kofron of Leland led the I.M.C.A. Hobby Stocks for eight laps until Earl Webner of Garner and Tim Smith of Clarion claimed the two top spots for themselves in the 15-lap event. Webner picked up the win followed by Smith and Tony Smidt of Britt. Randy Hadacek of Britt finished fourth.

Cory Gansen of Clear Lake won his sixth feature of the season in the Econo class followed by Matt Byrne of Woolstock and Harry Armstrong of Badger. Aaron Anderson of Goldfield placed fourth.

On the eve of their one year anniversary of when they met, at the 2001 Big Bud Shootout at Hancock County Speedway, Jean Miller of West Des Moines and Dennis Kiley of Corwith listened as their special song came over the PA and watched fireworks suddenly erupt overhead. During a break in the action between features, Kiley proposed to Miller while the pace truck presented the sign on the front straight to the crowd and Miller asking the special question. She said yes.

Racing action continues this Friday with Fan Appreciation night, sponsored by Picture This! of Forest City. Hot laps begin at 7 p.m. with racing at 7:30 p.m.
