Drama decides points titles at Deer Creek

Jim Chisholm won the USRA Modified main event.

Jim Chisholm won the USRA Modified main event.

Saturday was the final night for track points at Deer Creek Speedway for 2024. Another nice field of cars signed in on Kibble Equipment Night. The show was also supported by Randy & Sandy Norby, Pinicon Farms and First Supply.

There were a couple of point battles that had slim possibilities of a possible challenge if the right scenario took place. In two of those races that is what exactly happened. The Podeins Power Equipment King of The Creek title also came down to the final race of the night.

Dustin Gulbrandson held a 26-point lead over Nick Schwebach going into the final race. Gulbrandson redrew the pole while Schwebach started fourth.

Gulbrandson held the early lead, but Jason Newkirk applied heavy pressure. The pack was four wide for fourth in a wild tussle. Newkirk took the lead on lap five and then something broke on the left front of Gulbrandson’s car.

One lap later Gulbrandson slowed and the caution flew. He exited the race and the points drama increased. Newkirk led on the restart but Schwebach challenged. They had a great race for a few laps until Schwebach took the lead on lap 10.

After a caution, Schwebach opened up the lead, but the race behind him for second on back was incredible. There were eight cars in tight formation that swapped spots back and forth.

One last yellow flag set up a green-white-checkered dash to the finish. Schwebach took off and led the pack to the checkered flag and his second straight track title.

The tremendous race for second went to Blake Schneekloth who took the spot with Gavin Bussinger third. Newkirk ended up fourth and Steve Dwyer charged from 15th to fifth in the final rundown.

The USRA B-Mod points championship was also decided on the final lap of their 18-lap feature.

Defending track champion Hunter Kennedy entered the night 25 points ahead of Dustin Kruse, who started from the pole while Kennedy started seventh.

Taylor Skauge took the early advantage but Kruse led lap three. Skauge fired back to lead lap four by a whisker. Skauge led with Kruse right with him while Jake Richards ran a distant third.

Kruse rallied to take the lead with two to go until a yellow came out to set up another green-white-checkered finish. At this point, with Kruse in the lead, Kennedy had to finish eighth or better to win the title and that is where he was positioned on the restart.

Kruse darted away for his fourth win of the year while Skauge finished second and Richards was third. Noah Grinstead drove from 12th to fourth and Kaeden Bronner was fifth.

Kennedy ended up ninth so Kruse captured the championship by one point.

The USRA Stock Car feature was a dandy. Kyle Falck and Brayden Gjere waged battle up front. Gjere led lap one, but Falck threw a “slider” on lap two to take the lead. Gjere returned the favor in turn two of lap three, but Falck slid Gjere in turn three to lead the lap.

Gjere regained the lead before a yellow flag slowed the race on lap four. Falck and Gjere continued to race hard up front Gjere would again take the lead on lap 14, but Falck threw yet another slider on lap 16 to take the lead again.

Once again, Gjere powered back by Falck on lap 17 and led the final three laps for his 14th win overall in 2024. Falck was second while Brandon Hare ran third and secured the track title. Lucas Schott finished fourth and Levi Sand was fifth.

Joe Chisholm secured the USRA Modified track title just by taking the green flag in the feature race, but had to win the feature to take the King of The Creek crown. If he finished second, he would tie Kadden Kath and Kath held the tiebreaker.

Spencer Stock was chased by Lucas Schott for the lead while Nick Murgic and Keith Foss raced for third early on. Schott took the lead on lap five while Foss got to third.

Jim Chisholm was on the move and got past Murgic and Foss before two yellows would slow the race on laps 10 and 11. Chisholm took the lead on the restart and led lap 12. Schott got back by on lap 13 but Chisholm made the pass to lead the lap before the caution returned. Brandon Davis had worked his way to third from the 11th spot.

Chisholm led on the start while Davis got to second. Aaron Benson was on the move and into third before the final caution flew on lap 23. Chisholm led the final two laps for the win while Benson got to second with Davis third. Schott finished fourth and Joe Chisholm was fifth.

With Chisholm finishing fifth, Kath became the 2024 Podeins Power Equipment King of The Creek champion. Kath will collect $1,000 at the awards banquet coming up later this year.
