Zwanziger, Hovden, Hillman, Hills find Victory Lane in FCS season opener
The 2024 season at Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, got underway Friday night as 70 cars were in town to compete in four different classes of Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series action.
It was Dan Hovden of Decorah who appeared to have the upper hand early on in the USRA B-Mod division, but Alex Zwanziger of Walker decided to pull to the door of Hovden’s 16D midway through the feature race and made the pass through turn two just as Hovden cut down a tire and brought out a caution flag.
Zwanziger went on to lead the remaining laps as he claimed the victory, finishing ahead of Protivin’s Ben Moudry in second. After fixing his flat tire, Hovden charged back to a third place finish, while Kyle Anderson (Decorah) was fourth and Tim Heins (Waukon) was fifth.
In the USRA Stock Car main event, Mitch Hovden (Decorah) resumed his reign as one of the top dirt track racers in the country as he led every lap of the 20-lap feature. Cresco’s Jason Shlangen had a solid run in his 27S to take second, while Decorah’s Kevin Donlan crossed the line third. Fourth place went to Chris Roney (Decorah), while Brian Mahlstedt of Ionia rounded out the top five.
A total of 23 USRA Hobby Stocks were in attendance for Friday night’s event as Waukon’s Chance Hilman stood atop the results at the end of the night. The win is the second of Hilman’s career in a Hobby Stock after he notched his first earlier this spring.
Hilman had to work for the win as he held off a furious field of cars, including hard-charger Steve Larson (Decorah) who started ninth and finished second, and Daryl Moss (West Union) in third place. Decorah’s Paul Seabrooke took fourth, while Hawkeye’s Justin Hanson was fifth.
A pass for the lead coming out of turn four on the final lap of the USRA Tuner feature allowed Elkader’s Josh Hills to start out his 2024 campaign in victory lane. Hills overtook New Hampton’s Braiden Schaufenbuel, who led every lap to that point, but had to settle for silver.
Dalton Fels of Calmar finished third on the night, while Nolan Lerch (West Union) and Tom Kessel (Waukon) rounded out the top five.
