Cummins claims feature win, track championship at Deer Creek Speedway
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Deer Creek Speedway ended its regular racing programs Saturday night with 124 cars in six classes in action. A new record was set as over 100 cars checked into the back gate on every night of regular racing throughout the 2011 racing season.
The USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods had a dandy of a race. Shaun Walski jumped out front early on with Brandon Hare and Alex Williamson racing for second. The first caution waved on lap 2 and on the restart Walski led with Hare in second as the pack raced four wide for fifth. With four down, Hare pressured Walski for the lead as Jake Timm took over third and Kylie Kath worked into the top 5.
Five down Timm moved under Hare for second while Kath now started to pressure Hare for third. A caution with nine down saw Walski leading just slightly ahead of Timm. Kath in third with Hare in fourth while Jacob Bleess was working on Williamson for the fifth spot. With 10 down, Timm moved under Walski for the lead as Bleess raced with Hare for the fourth spot.
Walski and Kath were side by side for second on lap 11 Walski held on for second as Hare got moving again and started to battle Kath for third. As the checkers flew Timm took home the win, Walski in second while Hare nipped Kath at the line for third with Bleess rounding out the top 5.
Hare took home the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod track championship for 2011.
Joel Alberts led early in the USRA RHS Modified feature event with a big jumble of cars racing for position behind him. Jason Cummins, Bob Timm and Alberts were three wide for the lead on lap 2. Cummins took over the lead as Steve Wetzstein and Alberts raced for third behind Timm.
A caution with five down saw Cummins blast back out into the lead with Wetzstein in second. On the next lap, Timm moved back past Wetzstein for second. With eight down Mike Sorensen got his momentum working up top and moved past Wetzstein for third. Hank Rollinger Jr. and Wetzstein raced for fourth on lap 9. Rollinger took the spot while Brandon Davis and Nate Wasmund were side by side on Wetzstein’s bumper just outside the top 5.
With 12 down, Cummins was out to a full straight-away lead as Davis took over fifth. Sorensen was quickly gaining on Timm in second and on lap 11 he took away the second position. Davis moved into fourth on lap 18.
A caution with 22 down saw Cummins lead. Timm, Davis and Sorensen battling for second while Tim Donlinger, Wetzstein, Jason Miller and Bobby Swanson playing pin pong for fifth as they bounced off each other in a four side battle to the white.
As the checkers flew it was Cummins with the win, Sorensen second, Davis third. Timm and Miller rounded out the top 5.
Cummins was crowned the USRA RHS Modified track champion for 2011.
