Jess Folk Jr. returns to Humboldt winner's circle

HUMBOLDT, Kan. -- Due to the absense of a demo derby at this year's Allen County Fair, Humboldt Speedway offered up a rare "two-fer" with back-to-back race nights on Friday and Saturday.

Round 1 began with some of the cleanest, meanest, most intense racing yet this year.

Our thoughts, however, are with Justin "Whitey" Folk, who had to leave the track after his heat race due to an extremely painful neck problem. Reportedly, he sought care at the Allen County Hospital. No word on his condition at press time.

USRA RHS Modifed feature winner Jess Folk Jr. nearly had a pain of his own in the form of runner up-John Allen.

Folk led by as much as a straight-away for 18 laps while Allen put on a driving clinic, threading his way through the field to get into second place.

With two laps remaining, the first caution of the race flew. That put the front-runners clear of lapped traffic and set the stage for an epic shootout.

During the scramble, Folk surprised many by choosing the high side for the restart, effectively giving Allen the inside pole.

As the crowd held it's collective breath, the green flag dropped and Folk rocketed through turns 1-2, took the lead down the back chute and never looked back, effectively serving notice that he is back on his game.

The best seat in the house belonged to Paden Phillips, who finished behind the dueling duo in third. Scott Daniels tallied fourth while Ryan Whitworth battled from dead last to fifth.
