Alberts, Hare get wins at Dodge County Speedway

KASSON, Minn. -- It was a sultry Sunday night at the Dodge County Speedway as another night of American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series action took place.

Brandon Hare zoomed off of row 1 in the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod feature and led from start to finish in the 18-lap race for his first win of the season. Billy Steinberg ran second until Kylie Kath zipped past on lap 5. Shaun Walski also snuck past Steinberg one lap later for the third position.

Kath closed in on Hare, but slipped high in turn 4 on the seventh circuit and that allowed Walski to take second. The race for fifth was good when Greg Mattick, Erik Kanz and Jacob Bleess went three wide. Mattick would take the spot and tried to close on Steinberg. Hare skated away to win his first of the year at Kasson. Walski finished a very strong second with Kath, Steinberg and Mattick in the top 5.

The nightcap of the night was the 25-lap USRA RHS Modified feature. The highline was the preferred groove tonight and Joel Alberts took off from the pole. Alberts quickly stretched out his lead and left Darwyn Karau and Steve Wetzstein locked in battle for second.

Wetzstein threw everything but the kitchen sink at Karau but just could not get enough bite on the bottom of the track to get by. Alberts dodged a bullet when Tom Brink spun directly in front of him on lap 13. Alberts somehow avoided him, but the yellow erased his lead.

Alberts again took off and Wetzstein finally dispatched of Karau for second. Then it was Brandon Davis, Jason Cummins and Karau three wide out of turn 2 for third. They ran out of room and Karau made slight contact with the backstretch wall.

Alberts drove on from there for his second win of the season with Wetzstein’s charge a few car lengths short. Cummins brought home third with Davis and Karau in the top 5.

The 154th Dodge County Fair kicks off Wednesday, July 13, with races at 7 p.m. featuring the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods, Northern Vintage Cars and all the other regular classes with the exception of the USRA RHS Modifieds. The fair will conclude on Sunday, July 17, with more racing in all seven classes with the action at 6 p.m. for that night only.
