Wetzstein, Hare top big fields at Deer Creek Speedway
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- After record heat on Thursday and Friday, the Saturday night racing action at Deer Creek Speedway was hot but the air temps were perfect for drivers and fans alike. A great crowd was on hand for the annual Tom Kadlec and Altenburg Construction Firecracker event with 143 cars checked into the back gate.
Josh Smith jumped out to the early lead in the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod feature event with three- and four-wide racing mid-pack. An early restart saw Jake Timm and Drew Lawson racing for the lead with Smith now in third. Nate Chodur worked into fourth as Erik Kanz and Brandon Hare racing for fifth.
On lap 3, Hare raced with Chodur for the fourth spot and then took over the spot while Lawson led up front. Another caution on lap 5 saw Lawson leading and Timm in second, Chodur and Smith continued to race for third. Smith brought out the caution on lap 8 with a breakdown. On the restart Lawson led with Hare and Timm racing for second, Chodur sat in fourth with Kylie Kath in fifth.
With 12 completed, Hare and Lawson were battling for the lead with Timm in third. Hare took over the lead with Lawson pressuring him for the next two laps until Timm moved around Lawson to take over the second spot as the checkers flew over the field. It was Hare with the win and Timm in second. Lawson, Chodur and Dan Tenold rounded out the top five.
An early restart in the USRA RHS Modifieds saw Jay Ihrke leading with Hank Rollinger Jr. in second. Brandon Davis quickly caught Rollinger and took over second while Steve Wetzstein moved into third on lap 3.
Mike Sorensen and Tim Donlinger were side by side for fourth on lap 5, and Donlinger took over fourth on lap 7 running low on the speedway.
Another caution on lap 13 bunched up the field. On the restart, Wetzstein moved under Ihrke for the lead while Davis dropped back to third. Donlinger challenged Davis for third and then the two moved past Ihrke to take their battle for second.
With 16 down, Jason Krohn and Bob Timm raced for fifth. Timm took over the position and then worked past Ihrke for fourth on lap 20, but Wetzstein was strong up front and took home the win over Davis, Donlinger, Timm and Ihrke.
