Bohr picks up the win at Cresco
by Amber Cimmiyotti
CRESCO, IA. (August 11, 2002) - It was Kid's Night tonight at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa as O'Henry's Stitches-n-Prints sponsored the nights racing action.
Taking the track first was the Stock Car feature race, being made up from two weeks ago. There were 4 laps down to start the race, so there was a lot of racing action left to go. Jeff Schluetter was sitting in the number one position starting this race and was looking to keep it until the checkered. Lynn Panos accepted Gordy's A Challenge and was only in ninth at the start of the race. Schluetter had a very fast car and Panos tried his best to catch up, but Schluetter was just to fast. Schluetter came away with first, followed by Panos, Gerald Peter, and Brian Tank.
The regular night of racing began next with the heat races. Hobby Stocks were first to take the track with wins going to Tony Miller, Don Besse, and Jeremy Moellers. Picking up wins in the Stock Car heat races were Lynn Panos, Mike Bergan, and Mike Kelly.
Modifieds were next on the track with heat wins going to Darin Duffy, Ron Konkel, and Chuck Stanton. Randy Koshatka and Gary Gulrud picked up wins in the Hornet heat races and the Factory Stock heat wins went to Dan Konmen and Jeremy Broszert.
The Cash Dash was the next event on the track, featuring the top two finishers from the heat races. Picking up the Cash Dash wins were Darin Walch in the Hobby Stock, Lynn Panos in the Stock Car, and Ron Konkel in the Modified. Walch was the only racer to take Gordy's A Challenge.
It was a wild feature night in all the classes as there was caution after caution after caution. The races turned out to be very long, but very exciting the same. The Hornet feature was the first on the track. Steve Dwyer was looking for his fourth feature win in a row but an early accident took him to the pits. Matt Cahoon and Nathan Cahoon were battling for the lead when Scott Spilde came up hard, trying to take it from them both. Matt Cahoon ended up crossing the finish line first, followed by Spilde, Nathan Cahoon, and Randy Koshatka.
Next to take the track was the Factory Stock feature race. Kurt Krauskof took an early lead and looked like he would walk away with it, but Gary Rotenbarger came charging hard and battled for the lead. Keith Eischens and Jeremy Broszert were also battling up there, but a blown engine took Broszert out of the race. Crossing the line first was Krauskof. Rotenbarger finished second, followed by Eishens and Bruce Michels.
Darin Walch accepted Gordy's A Challenge in the Hobby Stock feature race, which put him at the back of the pack. Tony Miller had a good, fast car but Steve Holthaus and Dan Christopher were battling right behind him. Holthaus and Christopher got around him at the same time, but a fast Jeremy Moellers and Darin Walch were approaching. All eyes were on the finish line as the checkered flag came out as it was a very tight race. Coming out of turn four, Moellers and Christopher got tangled, giving Walch the chance to go to the inside and pick up second. Holthaus finished first and Walch was second. Moellers picked up third as he went through the finish line sideways, just ahead of Christopher.
The Stock Cars were next on the track, making their second feature appearance of the night. Gerald Peter started tenth and got an early lead, only to battle with Mike Bergan. Scott Bauer was on the move, starting in fifteenth and quickly making his way through the pack. With only four laps to go, Bergan went low and hit a tire, sending him all the way back to fifth, which made it a tight race for the second position. Peter came away with the win, followed by Lynn Panos, Brian Tank, and Scott Bauer.
The last event on the track was the Modified feature. Dan Bohr, Kevin Pittman, Darin Duffy, and Ron Konkel all had fast cars and everyone of them was looking for the lead. A restart on lap eight gave Bohr the lead but Pittman was coming on strong. With four laps to go, it was clear that Bohr would pick up the win, but second place was still up for grabs between Pittman and Duffy. Bohr did pick up the checkered flag, Pittman got second, followed by Duffy and Konkel.
Join us next week as Mabe's Pizza & Restaurant sponsor the night's racing action.
