Davis, Hare emerge as Deer Creek Speedway opens 2011 racing season
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Mother Nature finally put away the winter gloves and brought out a beautiful Saturday in May for the season opener at Deer Creek Speedway. Before the racing action was completed 127 cars hit the two race tracks at the speedway.
After the completion of the heat race action the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods hit the track first. Ben Anderson jumped out front with Kylie Kath in second, Brandon Hare quickly moved into third on lap one. With two laps completed Kath and Hare raced for second while they raced three wide for fifth. A caution on lap three tightened the field back up. On the restart Anderson led with Kath trying to work to his outside from second. Hare ran in third as Kath made the upper line work and moved into the lead as he powered by with Hare following the line into second on the next lap. Erik Kanz sat in fourth while John Warrington, Parker Hale and Greg Mattick battled for fifth. Mattick took over fifth with eight down as the laps started to click off. The final caution flew on lap twelve and on the restart Kath had his hands full of Hare. Hare made the final pass for the lead with fourteen down while Kanz now sat in third ahead of Anderson while Hale took control of the fifth position. Kath changed lines over the final four circuits trying to find a way around Hare up front but was unable to muster a final charge. At the checkers it was Hare, Kath, Kanz, Anderson and Hale for the top five.
The final race of the night saw Steve Wetzstein jump out front in the USRA RHS Modified feature event. Bobby Swanson sat in second early after passing Dustin Scott for the position. Behind them saw Nate Wasmund in fourth. A restart with three down saw Swanson pull to the infield with a flat tire handing Scott the second spot back. Behind Scott Keith Foss sat in third while Wasmund and Brandon Davis raced for fourth. A restart with nine down saw Wetzstein leading with Scott in second, Brandon Davis worked under Foss for the third spot. After clearing Foss, Davis moved to the topside of the speedway and found a really fast line around the speedway. Davis moved past Scott and was pressuring Wetzstein for the lead as another caution flew. On the restart with twelve completed Wetzstein went up top to block Davis's fast line but had problems getting around the corner allowing Davis to take over the lead. Wetzstein dropped back outside of the top five. Scott sat in second while Jason Cummins who had been slowly working his way forward moved into third. With eighteen completed Davis had pulled out to over a half straight lead. Bob Timm worked into the top five. With only five circuits remaining Cummins moved past Scott for the second spot but was unable to gain any ground on Davis up front. As the checkers waved Davis won by a straight away over Cummins, Scott, Foss and Timm.
Racing action resumes next Saturday the 14th of May. Slingshots will be racing on the Button Buck speedway at 2:00 with action on the Deer Creek Speedway starting at 5:00. All six classes will be in action at the speedway. Hope to see everyone at "The Creek."
