Mather, Wood, McDaniel, Brown top hot night at Southern Iowa Speedway

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – With temperatures in the 90s, the action was just as hot on the track Wednesday night for American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series action at the Southern Iowa Speedway.
With all four classes in action sponsored by Palmer for Representative, the weather threatened to the west of the Mahaska County Monster but all events were put in the books with very few cautions and done before 10 p.m.
The first feature was the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars with Nathan Wood of Keswick and Mike Van Gendren of Newton going wheel to wheel and swapping the lead as they went all-out for the win. It thrilled the crowd and brought them to their feet with Wood making the run to the inside of Van Gendren pay off at the finish line by a fender. Third went to Kyle Harwood of Osky and first-time visitor David Denham of Kahoka, Mo., was fourth.
The USRA Hobby Stock feature was be a wild one – on and off the track. Todd Reitzler of Grinnell crossed the finish line first but was disqualified during post-race technical inspections due the discovery of ported cylinder heads. Eldon driver Craig Brown finished second on the track, but was given the win after the disqualification. It was his career-first win at Osky. The second spot went to Kris Walker of Oskalloosa while Derek Kirkland of Centerville got the third finishing position after Donavan Nunnikhoven of Sully was also disqualified due to ported cylinder heads. Andrew Hustead of Colony, Mo., wound up fourth.
The USRA RHS Modifieds saw Webster’s Colt Mather take the lead and never look back. Mather led 1ll 18 laps for the win. The second spot went to Greg Cox of Altoona, who was celebrating his birthday with a runner-up finish. Third went to Scott Dickey of Packwood and Steven Blattler of Oskaloosa snared fourth.
In the final feature of the night, the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods saw Jason McDaniel of Eldon take the lead early on. The former USRA Hobby Stock track and national champion had to deal with two cautions and ensuing restarts to make his first visit to victory lane in 2010. In the tech area, the second- and third-place finishers, Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa and Mike Shelton of Ottumwa, were disqualified due to their rear gears having a full spool. This gave Oskaloosa’s Carter Van Den Berg the runner-up paycheck with Bill Gibson of Knoxville in third and Mike Wanders of Keswick in fourth.
The Southern Iowa Speedway rolls out the red carpet for the Deery Brothers Summer Series when the IMCA Late Models come to town Wednesday, July 21, during the annual Southern Iowa Fair presented by KBOE Radio. Also on the racing card will be a full program of the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series featuring USRA RHS Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.
Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5:30. Hot laps are set for 7 with racing to start at 7:30.
The Southern Iowa Speedway is a half-mile semi-banked clay oval located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then 0.3 mile north on I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds).
