OSKALOOSA, Iowa – After more than eight inches of rain fell since last Wednesday, few would have thought that racing was possible this Wednesday at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Nonetheless, Mother Nature gave the fans a picture-perfect night for racing as Community 1st Credit Union in Oskaloosa presented the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series featuring Musco USRA Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.
The first main event on the Mahaska County Monster featured the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars with a good two-car battle for the win just like last week. Nathan Wood of Keswick and Shane Weller of Agency battled long and hard, but not before Damon Murty of Chelsea led the first five laps. Wood took the lead from Murty with Weller following. When the checkers dropped, Wood took the win with Weller in second, Murty third and Mike Van Genderen of Newton taking fourth.
The MUSCO USRA Modifieds saw a two-car battle with Oskaloosa's Ron Ver Beek and Scott Dickey of Packwood going wheel to wheel for the first 10 laps and swapping the lead several times before Ver Beek made his way to victory lane. Dickey settled for second, followed by Steven Blattler of Oskaloosa in third and Brandon Banks of Washington in fourth.
The USRA Hobby Stock feature was a thriller with two- and three-wide racing for the lead. Andrew Hustead of Colony, Mo., led the field to the green and paced the first 5 laps before a flat tire ended his run. This turned the lead over to Dale Porter of Pulaski, who led until lap 13 before his engine expired, giving Oskaloosa's Steve Allen the lead. Allen then held off several challenges from Kris Walker, Matt Messmaker and Danny Thrasher to take the win after trying to get to victory lane for six years. The runner-up spot went to Thrasher, followed by Messmaker and Todd Reitzler.
The final feature of the night was the Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods with Bill Gibson of Eldon leading all 15 laps for the win. Gibson held off defending track champion Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa with first-time visitor Ken Kositzky of Cedar Rapids finishing third and last week's winner, Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa, snagging the fourth spot.
Another wild night of wheel-to-wheel action is in store for next Wednesday, June 23, as Musco Lighting presents the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series featuring Musco USRA Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.
With 21 or more entries, the winner of the Musco USRA Modified main event will pocket $1,000 with a minimum $100 to each starter. USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will race for $400 to win and $75 to start, while both the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will battle for $300 to win and $60 to start.
Pits open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and the first heat race starts at 7:30. Tickets are $8 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12 and children ages 5 and under are always admitted free of charge. Pit passes are $25.
The Southern Iowa Speedway is a half-mile semi-banked clay oval located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then 0.3 mile north on I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds).
