Dodge County Speedway checkers wave for Cummins, Hare
KASSON, Minn. - For the first time this season, it felt like summer at the Dodge County Speedway. Seventy-eight racing machines signed in the back gate this week to tackle the historic fairgrounds oval.
Three drivers scored their first wins of the season while the rest added to their totals.
Brandon Hare has been the car to beat this season in the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods. Hare started on the pole tonight and pretty much had things in control the entire way. There were a few cautions along the way, but nobody had anything for the leader.
Hare dominated for his fifth feature win at Dodge County. Scott Demmer had a solid run in second with Jared Boumeester third. Kylie Kath and Jeremy Schaufenbuel finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Twenty USRA RHS Modifieds were on hand tonight and nineteen took the green flag for their 25-lap main event. It was a barn-burner from the drop of the green to the checkered flag.
Adam Stockhausen and Mike Sorensen raced side-by-side with Jason Krohn in tow. Sorensen wheeled around the high side of the speedway and stole the lead in turn two on lap three. Krohn challenged Stockhausen for second and then Steve Wetzstein entered the crowd up front.
Krohn and Wetzstein both zoomed past to second and third as Krohn set after the leader. Jason Cummins drove from row four and now got by Stockhausen for the fourth position on lap seven. Krohn was cutting into Sorensen’s advantage as the leaders started to enter lapped traffic on lap twelve.
The leaders started working lapped traffic as Wetzstein reeled in Krohn and blasted to second on lap fourteen. Cummins got around Krohn and was up to third. Also on the fly was fifth row starter Kelly Shryock.
Wetzstein was all over Sorensen for the lead on lap sixteen as the top cars continued to work through lapped traffic. Cummins was right on the top two and briefly wrestled second away from Wetzstein on lap seventeen.
The race really heated up as Sorensen and Cummins had gone to the low groove, while Wetzstein blew around the top. Wetzstein drove to the outside of Sorensen on lap nineteen as Cummins was on Sorensen’s rear bumper.
Sorensen and Wetzstein banged together coming out of turn four with Sorensen’s right rear quarter and spoiler getting crunched. Pieces of the spoiler fell on to the racing surface bringing out the caution on lap nineteen.
When the race restarted, the top three were still very close. Cummins then got below Sorensen for the lead on lap twenty-one. Into turn one they charged and Sorensen slipped over the banking in turn two and spun off the track bringing the caution back out.
Cummins would lead the field back to the green for the three lap shootout. Shryock was up to third now and was working on Wetzstein for second. Shryock got by on lap twenty-three, but Wetzstein gave him a run on the final lap.
Cummins took the win and an extra $200 bonus from Stevenson Insurance in Kasson. Shryock held off Wetzstein for second. Track point leader, Josh Angst was fourth with Krohn finishing fifth.
Next Sunday, May 30, racing will get underway at 5 p.m. as the USMTS Modifieds invade the Dodge County Speedway for their annual Memorial Day Weekend blockbuster. USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods will also be running.
