Pinkerton, Weller, Johnson, Hovden top 23rd Annual MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge finale

After nearly a month of waiting after rain and snows in October forced two postponements into the first week of November, the fans at the Southern Iowa Speedway were treated to some warm temperatures and even hotter racing action Sunday as a field of 110 cars checked into the pit area for the 23rd Annual MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge.

The first feature of the afternoon with the MUSCO Lighting USRA Modifieds saw Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon taking the $1,000 payday in prime fashion. Pinkerton had to handle two late-race cautions that closed the field up and wiped away a nice size lead, but this didn’t stop his #17p machine.

The battle on the track was for the second spot with Scott Dickey and Zack VanderBeek racing hard with VanderBeek making a last-lap pass for the runner-up spot. Ryan Gustin was fourth and Donovan Lodge completed the top-5.

Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon, Iowa, won the MUSCO Lighting USRA Modified main event Sunday during the 23rd Annual MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods saw A.J. Johnson of Oskaloosa take the $700 win, holding off a stellar 24-car field for his first win of 2009. Johnson’s year saw some ups and downs, but this put a exclamation point on his season. The second spot went to last year's winner, Cayden Carter, who raced his way from sixth to second with Scott Davis holding down the third spot after taking the green in the 12th starting position.

Fourth went to Colter Deutsch, who traveled more than seven hours from his home in Ellsworth, Minn., while Matt Lettow rounded out the top-5 finishers.

A.J. Johnson of Oskaloosa, Iowa, won the Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mod main event Sunday during the 23rd Annual MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The USRA Hobby Stock feature saw Chris Hovden show the crowd why he’s the 2009 American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series national champion. The driver from Cresco, Iowa, had to hold off a late-race charge from Donavan Nunnikhoven, who tried to close the gap but came up about a car-length short. The third spot went to polesitter Todd Reitzler, who led several laps early. Fourth went to Danny Thrasher and finishing fifth was Kris Walker.

With the win, Hovden completed a two-track four-race sweep of season-ending specials. Not only did he win the opening night of the MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge on Oct. 9, but also won both features on Friday and Saturday at the Pepsi Memphis Nationals at the Scotland County Speedway to take home $2,100 over the four nights of racing.

Chris Hovden of Cresco, Iowa, won the USRA Hobby Stock main event Sunday during the 23rd Annual MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

In the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car division has seen a lot of things happen over the years but this was one of the best and most talked about main events that has ever been staged at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster. On lap 3 of the main event, seven cars crashed in turns 1-2 after Nathan Wood broke a ball joint and made contact with Mike Vangenderen. The leaders smacked the outside retaining wall and a major pile-up followed with Shane Weller, Dan Christopher, Chad Walters, Corey Stout and Todd Staley also being involved.

After a nearly 30-minute red flag delay, five drivers retired from the race while Wood and Weller returned from the pit area to join the rear of the field. On the restart, Matt Greiner was the leader followed by Mike Bergan and Mitch Hovden battling for the second spot. Wood raced his way from the back to fourth but another ball joint problem ended his run to the front and sent him to the trailer for the evening. Greiner led the field with six laps remaining but Weller was marching to the front after changing an A-Frame, shock, spring, tire and wheel during the earlier red flag.

Weller, who also won the first night of the MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge, made the pass on Steve Jackson for fourth on lap 16 and set his sights on the second- and third-place cars of Bergan and Hovden. Weller closed the gap and put pressure on Bergan with two laps remaining while Greiner was still leading the field. As the white flag flew, Weller made it three wide through the corner with Greiner and Hovden. Weller took a car-length leadd into turn 3, then crossed beneath the checkered flag with the crowd screaming as he took the $800 win. Greiner took the second spot after leading all but the final lap. Hovden was third, with Bergan fourth and Jackson in fifth.

Shane Weller of Agency, Iowa, won the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car main event Sunday during the 23rd Annual MUSCO Lighting Fall Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The staff and officials from RL Promotions and the Southern Iowa Speedway thanks everybody who supported the 2009 season, including the great sponsors, fans, drivers, crews and media for a great 2009 season and look forward to the 2010 season.
