Schroeder claims back-to-back bonus at Southern Iowa

OSKALOOSA, Ia. (June 6, 2002) - In the pre-race drivers meeting, promoter Bill McCroskey announced that he would be raising the weekly IMCA Modified winner's share for the rest of the season and that was all the motivation Randy Schroeder needed as he charged to the feature win on Long John Silver's of Ottumwa night at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Brad Pinkerton would charge from the outside of the fifth row to claim the IMCA Stock Car feature while Kris Walker checkered first in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. The Modified feature got off to an auspicious start as Ron VerBeek, Mike Hughes, and Pete Hutzel tangled coming out of turn four. The restart had similar results as Rod McGlothlen and Danny Wallace got together in turn two. Schroeder would then take the lead off the next restart, but he would soon have company from Brad Pinkerton. However, on lap eleven, Pinkerton would later encounter mechanical problems and coast to a stop to again bring out the yellow flag. This would put Troy Folkerts and a resurgent Wallace on the leader's bumper as the field went back to green. However, Folkerts was unable to stop Schroeder from taking his second straight feature at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Promoter McCroskey also started a new program this week called the "Osky Track's Win 'Em Back to Back" that awards any driver claming two straight feature wins in any class a $50 bonus that will roll over until claimed. Folkerts would finish in second with Wallace in third. John VanDenBerg and Mark Mundell rounded out the top five. Brandon Banstra led the field into turn number one and held off Don Sanders to lead the first lap. However, Sanders was not to be denied as he quickly moved passed a fading Banstra and brought Dave Wilson along with him. A lap later, Wilson would do the same to Sanders as he charged into the top spot. As the field reached halfway, Sanders grenaded his engine on the backstretch while running second. On the next restart, Jon Hunnell looped his machine in turn two and collected Brian Edel, Howard Gordon Jr. and Josh Newell. Wilson would lead following the restart with Brad Pinkerton, who started tenth, and a resurgent Banstra in third. Lap 10 would see the demise of Wilson, as a flat right tire would sideline him. Pinkerton then took the top spot and would hold it to the finish, as Ross McCombs would come in second as Corey Stout edged by Banstra at the line for third. Ron VerBeek completed the top five. Jeff Hovick claimed Pinkerton after the checkered, and it was accepted. In turn one of the original start of the IMCA Hobby Stock A-main, Mike Shelton and Steve Landgrebe tangled in turn two. On the restart, Shannon Sherwood jumped out to the early lead, but soon had company from his brother, Travis. As they completed lap 3, Travis got to the inside of his bother and took over the lead. He would hold the top spot until lap 11 when Kris Walker completed his drive through the field when he passed Sherwood in turn 1. From there, Walker would hold on to claim his third feature win of the season over Travis Sherwood, Rick VanDusseldorp, Scott Buehneman, and TJ Criss. At the conclusion of the event, Mark Ford claimed the engine of second place Travis Sherwood, and he did accept. RESULTS IMCA HOBBY STOCKS Hobby Stock Heat 1: 1. Al Bonnell Jr., 2. Mike Shelton, 3.
