College Night was held at the Vado Speedway Park on Saturday with students, staff and faculty from any area college or university being admitted into the grandstands for just $5 and a great night was had by all.

The final event of the night was the 25-lap USRA Modified main event, which ended up being a survival of the fittest event with one driver not starting, nine not finishing and two being disqualified.

Jake Gallardo raced his way from his eighth starting spot to the lead by capitalizing on a mid-race restart and cruised to an apparent victory over seventh-starting Nick Rivera, Royal Jones, Jimmy Ray and Christy Barnett.

But Gallardo’s No. J17 did not meet deck height rules and he was not awarded the win.

Rivera inherited the victory for his efforts, moving Jones to second. Fourth-finishing Ray was also disqualified for the same infraction moving Barnett to third, Terry Tipton to fourth and Carlos Ahumada Sr. into the top five.

The Vado Speedway Park will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 28, at 7:30 p.m. with the track’s final Hot City Nights promotion of the 2021 season where fans from Fabens, Homestead Meadows, Agua Dulce and Butterfield (Texas) will be admitted into the grandstands for just $5. Pits open at 4 with the grandstand opening at 5.
