Upper Iowa Speedway checkers wave for Krauskopf, Boyer, Hare
DECORAH, Iowa - There was a lot of attention paid to racing in Iowa this past weekend with the first ever NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Iowa Speedway. But, as always, the real show – the real action - was taking place at local dirt tracks.
And nowhere was that more true than at the Upper Iowa Speedway of Decorah as drivers once again put on a heck of a show, giving race fans their money’s worth and a whole lot more.
Dan Hovden started fourth in the USRA Hobby Stock feature but had problems early on, bringing out the first caution. Once racing resumed, it was Andy Stinson leading when Scott Spilde and Danny Sacquintne tangled, bringing out another caution. Following that incident, it was the always tough Brandon Hare who made his way through the field from his eighth-place starting position to move into the lead. Mark Lewis was also running strong, battling door to door with Stinson for second and would use a fast, outside line to get the job done. Steve Larson and Chris Hovden then battled for third with Larson securing the spot and Lewis hanging on to second but the win went go to Hare.
Jeremy Schaufenbuel led in the early running of the USRA Karl Chevrolet B-Mod feature while Junior Boyer quickly moved into second after starting seventh. Just after points leader Matt Jones made his way to third, a caution flew for debris on the track. After the re-start, Andy Kelly got past Jones for third with Boyer continuing to lead. A second caution then flew for a spin by Mike Kelly. The cautions continued as the race rolled on, including incidents involving Brian Lund and Luke Howard. In between the cautions the racing was excellent, and the final three laps were all of that and more as Boyer held off a charge by Eric Verthein, Andy Kelly and Jones to claim the thrilling win.
Troy Hansmeier, back at the UIS for the first time in a long time, brought out an early caution in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car feature. Following the re-start, there was some fantastic three-wide racing between Cody Cook, Mitch Hovden and Neil Thesing. Thesing then tangled with Cody Henkes and collected some other cars in the process, bringing out a caution. Cook and Hovden then battled side by side for the lead following the re-start. Kurt Krauskopf, who started all the way back in 12th, moved his #60 into the lead pack as well. With Hovden leading, another caution flew when a barrier tire was kicked up onto the track. Following the re-start, there was some hard racing at the front of the pack between Krauskopf and Hovden for the top spot. However, it was Krauskopf who got the upper hand this time around as he held off Hovden, Kevin Donlan and Kyle Falck for the hard fought win.
