VanderBeek, Greiner, McDaniel, Walker tame Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – Racing action at Southern Iowa Speedway on Wednesday saw the young race fans getting a chance to ride around the speedway in racecars, as well as winning prizes, candy, money and a new bicycle. For race fans of all ages, the evening featured four thrilling main events in all four American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series divisions during another "Licensed to Thrill" night with residents from the town of Ottumwa getting free admission to the grandstands.

The USRA Hobby Stock feature went to Kris Walker of Oskaloosa, who led all 15 laps en route to his 101st career feature win. Bobby Greene of Eddyville tried several times to pressure Walker, but settled for a close second with Danny Thrasher of Agency third, Nathan Wood of Keswick taking fourth and Oskaloosa's Justion Hook finishing fifth.

Wood continues atop the points standings with a 67-point advantage over Walker. Greene is third, T.J. Henderson is fourth and Thrasher sits fifth.

In the USRA Karl Chevrolet B-Mod feature, last year's USRA Hobby Stock track champion Jason McDaniel of Eldon and rookie Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa battled for the win. Carter tried several times to get a run on the leader but McDaniel was too strong and took his eighth overall win of the year in the class. Carter took a strong second with Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa taking the third spot, Mike Shelton of Bloomfield in fourth and  Eddyville's Bobby Greene in the fifth spot.

Groenendyk leads Shelton by 67 points in the track standings, while Carter is just four more points back in third. Andrew Schroder is just six poins behind Carter in fourth and Carter VanDenBerg is fifth - just two markers behind Schroder.

The USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car feature was a thriller as three drivers wanted the top spot. Mike VanGenderen of Newton took the early lead but defending track champion Matt Greiner of Washington made it a two-car battle on the third lap. The action heated up even more with eighth-starting Shane Weller of Agency making it a three-car battle. The trio swapped the lead with nobody knowing who was going to win. The crowd came to their feet on the final lap with all three cars side by side and Greiner taking the win by mere inches. VanGenderen settled for second and Weller was a close third. Oskaloosa's Brian Mitrisin and Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon rounded out the top-5.

The win helped Greiner pad his points lead in the full-fendered division, and now leads Mitrisin by 38 points. VanGenderen climbed a spot to third while Nathan Wood dropped to fourth. Kyle Anderson is currently fifth.

The USRA Modifieds saw Zack Vanderbeek use this week as a tune-up for the USMTS Modified event next week as he led all 15 laps en route to the win. Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon took second and defending track champion Colt Mather of Webster was third. The battle for fourth was a good one with Steven Blattler of Oskaloosa and Indianola driver Josh Truman going wheel to wheel at the checkers with Blattler snagging the spot.

Pinkerton leads the standings over VanderBeek, with Blattler third, Packwood's Scott Dickey fourth and Truman in fifth position.

Just four more points nights are remaining this season at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster as drivers begin the final stretch to the Pepsi Season Championships on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Next Wednesday, Aug. 5, MUSCO Lighting presents the return of the mud-slinging Modifieds of the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Tour with NASCAR fan favorite Kenny Wallace and Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip in attendance at the Southern Iowa Speedway to sign autographs and race with the USMTS Modifieds. Also on tap will ber USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks racing for track and national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Pits open at 5:00, grandstand gates swing open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:00 and the first green flag waves at 7:30.

Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons on Wednesday at all three Casey's General Stores locations in Oskaloosa. Check out www.caseys.com for more information or to find the Casey's General Store nearest you.
