Wood takes Hobby Stock prize at Oskaloosa; Stewart, Greiner, McDaniel also win

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series action was held at the Southern Iowa Speedway after a week absent due to a rain-out the previous Wednesday.

The first feature of the night was the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car feature going green to checkered with Matt Greiner of Washington and Mike VanGenderen of Newton battling for the win. Brain Mitrisin tried to make it a three-car battle but Greiner was able to hold off several challenges and took his first win of the season at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster. VanGenderen took the second spot followed by Brain Mitrisin and cousin Chase Mitrisin of Oskaloosa taking fourth.

In the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mod feature, race fans saw a third different winner in the very tough division. Two-time defending USRA Hobby Stock track champion Jason McDaniel of Eldon took the lead from Mike Wanders of Oskaloosa on lap 7 and never looked back in taking his first win since moving up to the B-Mod class in 2009. Young Oskaloosa driver Carter VanDenBerg tried to catch McDaniel's #85 machine but finished in the runner-up spot. The battle for the third spot between two Des Moines drivers, Josh Modde and Bryon Weyer, went to Modde.

The MUSCO Lighting USRA Modifieds tried two times on the original start with West Liberty driver Steve Boley jumping twice before having to start from the tail of the field. This was Boley’s first visit to the Southern Iowa Speedway and he was driving the former ride of David Holder of Clarence, Mo., who decided to end his driving career with the #71 team. 2005 MUSCO Lighting USRA Modified track champion Steve Stewart of Burlington took the lead and never looked back, cruising to the feature win. The runner-up spot went to Bruce Hanford of Davenport who was visiting for the first time in 2009. Josh Truman of Indianola ran in the second spot until five laps remaining when Hanford made the pass. Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon finished in the fourth spot.

The final main event of the night featured the USRA Hobby Stocks capping off a great night of racing and paying a hefty $700 to the winner. The drivers thrilled the crowd with two- and three-wide racing with Nathan Wood making the pass on Craig Brown of Eldon with seven laps remaining in the 18-lap event. Brown made his first appearance at Oskaloosa pay off with a runner-up spot that paid $400. The two drivers battled wheel to wheel, along with Dustin Griffiths who mixed it up but would end his run with brake problems. The third spot went to Donovan Nunnikhoven of Sully driving Mark Moore’s car. Danny Thrasher of Agency snared the fourth spot.

Next Wednesday, June 10, is Kids Night presented by the Oskaloosa Herald with free candy and a nickel toss for the kids. Plus, the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods will be running for a special purse paying $700 to win the main event. The rest of the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series will also join the card with action in the MUSCO Lighting USRA Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and USRA Hobby Stocks.

The pits will open at 5 p.m. and grandstand gates will open at 5:30, with hot laps at 7:15 and racing at 7:30 p.m. sharp.
