Groenendyk grabs first, Wood takes two in USRA action at Oskaloosa

Racing action at the Southern Iowa Speedway was held on Tuesday night with three American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series classes in action with the USMTS Modifieds making their first stop of the season at Osky.
The first feature was the Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods in action with Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa showing his father how to get the job done and powering his new machine to victory lane. Father Leroy finished second with but was later disqualified for an improper carburetor. This moved rookie Drew Lawson of Oskaloosa up to the second spot and Cory Brown of Ottumwa into third. The battle for fourth went to Andrew Schroeder of Keswick who passed Bryon Weyer of Des Moines in the closing laps.
The USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car division thrilled the crowd with three-wide racing action for the top spots with Nathan Wood of Keswick, along with Kyle Harwood of Oskaloosa and Brian Mitrisin of Oskaloosa mixing it up for the win. Harwood led the first five laps before Wood made the pass on the bottom of the track. Wood held off a late challenge from Mitrisin, who closed in on the rear bumper of Wood but came up short by two car-lengths. Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon finished third after starting eighth.
In the USRA Hobby Stock feature, 20 drivers tried their luck on the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster, going 15 laps with only one caution and Nathan Wood taking his second win of the night. Wood held off last week’s winner Bobby Greene of Eddyville who raced his way from the tenth starting spot to be the bridesmaid. The third place paycheck went to Chris Hovden of Cresco, who made the three-hour pull from Northeast Iowa. Kris Walker of Oskaloosa wound up fourth after making the pass on Dale Porter of Pulaski late in the contest.
