Allen wins tightest race of the year at Humboldt

HUMBOLDT, Kan. - About the only thing tighter than the national economy was Sunday night's USRA Modified feature at Humboldt Speedway.

Yes, Sunday.

After a couple of torrential downpours and a storm scare Friday night, Ron Whitworth and crew busted butt to run a Sunday night show.

Track conditions were not bad, but it was getting slick by feature time.

Johnny Allen and Justin "Whitey" Folk, two of the biggest and baddest, squared off on the front row.

Green flag. Folk in the lead, barely at first, gradually opening up and gaining a little room to breathe.

Allen, Dan Daniels and Gary Langworthy Jr. in a dogfight for second.

It takes alot to stay in front of a super quick group of cagey Modified pilots under perfect conditions for 19 laps, and on dry slick?

Oh, man.

Folk did all he could, but when the white flag flew, crafty veterans Allen and Daniels went for broke.

Three wide, swapping paint out of turn four, the trio broke for the finish line.

Had the race ended five feet sooner than it did, Folk would have won.

One wit observed after the races that Allen must have a dent in his floorboard from pushing the gas pedal.

Maybe so, but in that last five feet, it paid off.

Allen beat Folk by the circumfrence of the pipe in his front bumper.

Daniels took third, Langworthy was fourth, and Chris Vannoster finished fifth.

With good weather in the forecast, look foward to two nights of racing this weekend, with a regular show on Friday night and the 2nd Annual Dewaine Whitworth Memorial on Sunday.
