Mother Nature spares season opener at Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa - A beautiful day led to severe thunderstorms in the area with clouds building to the west of the Davis County Fairgrounds and storm warnings being issued the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway was spared with storms going to the north of the speedway and to the south the season opener opened with a bang. With 71 cars making the trip to the always fast semi-banked clay oval to try and take the first checkers of the 2009 season.

The first feature was the Pepsi-Cola USRA B-Mod feature with drivers from the age of 13 years of age to 50 years of age with pervious track champions to national champions in action along with rookie drivers the twelve lap event we green till lap ten when the caution flag would fly setting up a green, white and checkered finish. The battle for the top spot would got to Andrew Schroeder of Keswick who is the defending track champion from 2008. Schroder would hold off Eric Fullenkamp of Agency who would finish second but would later be disqualified due to not having a spark box being hooked-up for the GM performance crate motor. So second would go to Mike Shelton of Ottumwa along with Tyler Groenedyke of Oskaloosa in third and fourth going to Jim Walker of Mystic made the transition from the hobby stocks to the b-mods payoff with a nice finish.

In the Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stocks division Derek Kirkland of Centerville would top a stellar field of drivers with several lead changes and three wide racing that brought the crowd to it’s feet several times. Danny Thrasher of Agency would race his way from eighteenth starting spot to battle for the lead with two laps remaining but would finish in the runner-up spot Dustin Griffiths would lead several laps before having to goto the back of the field after getting spun on lap four and raced his way back to a third place finish and Mark Moore of Ottumwa finishing in the fourth spot.

The USRA Modifieds would see a group of highly skilled drivers take the green with Clarence, Mo. Driver David Holder power his stray dog chassie to victory lane for the second time in 2009 holding off the hard charging Richie Gustin of Gilman who had trouble in the heat race and started in the fourteenth starting spot in the feature and drove to the runner-up spot with the 2007 track champion Dennis Elliott returning to the track for a run at the crown and he took the third spot and Brandon Banks of Washington making the trip after another track was forced to cancel due to rain and Brandon would take the fourth spot after starting fifteenth in his stray dog chassie.

The Taylor Automotive USRA Stock Car feature was a thriller with Pat Rachels returning from the Carolinas to try his luck in the 34 machine and Rachels made the trip payoff holding off Shane Weller of Agency who made his way from the tenth starting spot to run down the leader and was to the inside of the Rachels machine coming off turn four but just couldn’t make the pass and ended up in the second spot with Matt Greiner of Washington taking the third spot with Mike Robinson of Moravia taking the fourth spot.

Next week's racing action will be sponsored by Community First Bank in Bloomfield with six classes in action with the five regular classes along with the 305 winged sprints on the card. Hot laps are at 7 p.m. and racing action at 7:30.
