Dillard outduels Sanders for Rancho Milagro USRA Fall Nationals crown

Cade Dillard celebrates after winning the USRA Modified main event.

Cade Dillard’s first trip to the Vado Speedway Park will be a memorable one as the 28-year-old from Robeline, Louisiana, led all 50 laps on Sunday to win the 20th Annual Rancho Milagro USRA Fall Nationals.

Dillard, who started on the pole of the USRA Modified feature by virtue of his feature win on Friday, beat Saturday night winner R.C. Whitwell to the first corner and then held off a furious attack from Rodney Sanders to stay out front the entire distance and take home the $20,101 top prize.

While Dillard stayed true to the shortest route around the 3/8-mile dirt oval, Sanders searched inside and out for a way around the leader.

Sanders, of Happy, Texas, tried to take advantage of lapped traffic—there was plenty as just one caution slowed the 50-lapper—and took an aggressive approach as the pair approached the white flag, but Dillard remained flawless and added his name to the list of dirt modified royalty that own a Fall Nationals trophy.

While the 2019 USMTS national champion settled for the runner-up paycheck behind Dillard, dirt late model star Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Illinois, held strong for a third-place finish ahead of Tucson’s Whitwell and Dereck Ramirez of Woodward, Oklahoma.

Johnny Scott came out of a “B” feature and finished sixth after starting 11th. Jimmy Mars, Hunter Marriott, Jake O'Neil and Zack VanderBeek rounded out the top 10.

The event, presented by S&S Fishing & Rental, Barnett Harley-Davidson and Casa Nissan of Las Cruces, was the richest in the race’s history thanks to an additional $101 added to the top spot in memory of local Modified racer Butch Reid who passed away last weekend. His car number was 101.

Cade Dillard won the USRA Modified main event.

In the American Racer USRA Stock Car main event, Angel Munoz of Lamar, Colorado, overcame a redraw that placed him eighth on the starting grid and stormed to his second win of the weekend.

Polesitter Aaron Spangler of Dove Creek, Colorado, followed in second with Clear Lake, Iowa’s Chanse Hollatz claiming the third spot. Fourth went to Luigi Truden of Rio Rancho and 2019 track champion Bryan Bennett of Tularosa finished fifth.

Angel Munoz won the American Racer USRA Stock Car main event.

Nick Rivera of Las Cruces capped his track championship in Out-Pace USRA B-Mods with his second triumph of the weekend as well.

Calvin Iverson, who traveled all the way from Eleva, Wisconsin, settled for second place with Josh Cain of Rio Rancho, Anthony’s Nathan Smith and 12th-starting Collen Winebarger of Corbett, Oregon, completing the top five at the finish line.

Nick Rivera won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod main event.

The Vado Speedway Park is a new state-of-the-art, semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located just off I-10 at exit 155, then 0.2 mile north on Stern Dr. (track is on your left) in Vado, New Mexico (between Las Cruces and El Paso).
