Knudtson earns first win in Gary Woodall Tribute

Lebanon's Tyler Knudtson flexed his muscle Friday night and captured his first Out-Pace USRA B-Mod win by leading all 15 laps in the Gary Woodall Tribute event at the Lebanon Midway Speedway.

Earning the pole after a heads-up redraw was pulled, Knudtson took his Cave Creek Resort/Knudtson's 32 Garage/Ruble Racing Engines No. 8K, to the lead on the opening lap from current track points leader Dillion McCowan and never looked back.

Knudtson, who came into the night second in track points, saw lady luck fall his way in the first qualifying heat when leader Danny Martin spun with only two laps remaining, and then Knudtson overtook new leader Barry White on the final lap as White slowed. When line-ups were posted, the win placed him and second heat race winner McCowan on the front row.

Knudtson could run anywhere on the smooth, quick track surface.

"The track crew had a nice berm up top side and you could run anywhere," Knudtson said. "but my car was working best by rolling in the corners and then gaining speed off the middle.

Last week's rain-out allowed the team to spend an extra week to go over everything on the car.

Entering the night's action, he was 56 points out of the top spot and gained five markers on McCowan with five points races left in the Spring/Summer Series.

Tight action behind the winner saw McCowan hold back Martin to claim the runner-up spot while Martin had a nice race with Arkansas regular Kelly Hicks for the spot while newcomer Jeremy Polston kept Bill Schaar at bay for fifth place.

Gary Woodall, who was the track announcer for a few seasons and a former racer, lost his battle with cancer last winter in which the Fourth of July Celebration date was named for the gentleman who also served his country in the military.

"Last year, we won the Bud Perry event and now the Woodall Tribute, that is pretty cool," Knudtson added. "The Roper event has slipped us but we will get it yet, hopefully next year.

"We have to keep good in the standings because with the TJR Factory 56 B Mod Missouri Nations in September which pays $5,600 to win, the track has two provisional spots. That race should bring some good cars and hopefully several cars here for the three-day event."

Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series action continues Friday, July 19, with action starting at 8 p.m. Headlined by the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod, racing also includes Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Hornets.

The Lebanon Midway Speedway is located 5 miles east of Lebanon on Highway 32, and then B Highway.
