MAYETTA, Kan. -- It is just past the midway point in the season for drivers and fans at Thunderhill Speedway, and the point battles are shaping up to be some of the closest battles that the Speedway has seen in it's 13-year history. Those battles will continue this weekend, July 15 with all regular classes plus the Thundersprints in action.
The USRA Stock Cars are experiencing a shake up as 15-year-old Kyle Covert has asserted himself as a contender, moving into the second spot last weekend behind Leif Weyer after picking up his first career victory. Covert trails Weyer by 40 points, a small deficit relative to the points structure. Eight points behind Covert in the third spot is Eric Weyer, who is also chasing his twin brother Leif for the top spot.
Tim Patch held the early season point lead in the USRA Hobby Stock division, but a hot stretch by Waylon Banks where he won six out of seven races catapulted him into the top spot. Patch isn't going away though; he picked up his first victory last weekend and trails by only 26 points. Jesse Shotts holds down the third spot in the standings, 72 points behind the leader.
Travis Patch is not only chasing a USRA Modified points championship at Thunderhill, but also a national championship. Patch currently leads veteran driver Bill Robison by 134 in the track standings, and also sits second in the national standings. Patch has claimed seven victories in the Modifieds this season at Thunderhill. Mark Zorn slipped to third in points after missing last weekend's races.
Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. this Saturday with races starting at 7:30. General admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for children 7-13, and ages 6 and under are admitted free. Pit passes are $20. For race day information call the speedway at 785.966.2844 or visit the track website at www.thunderhillmayetta.com.
