MAYETTA, Kan. -- Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, Kan., will host the 5th Annual Oren Covert Memorial Race this Saturday, June 17. This annual race has been held at Thunderhill every year since the passing of the local racing legend and avid Thunderhill supporter.
As a way to remember Covert, the event is held on a Saturday that falls on the 17th every year -- the number that Covert raced with religiously. Furthermore, Thunderhill Speedway retired Covert's #17 in the Modified division during the inaugural memorial race, making all drivers that come to Thunderhill running the #17 in that division place a letter behind it.
This weekend's events will feature a number of classes, including Thundersprints, USRA Modifieds, Superstocks, USRA Stock Cars, Pony Stocks and USRA Hobby Stocks. Special edition trophies will be awarded to the winners of each class, and $100 will be randomly awarded to one driver in each the five regular classes.
A new winner visited victory lane in the USRA Modified division last weekend as Justin Boney took the top spot. Boney stopped a two-race win streak by Travis Patch, who is the current points leader and who ranks third in the USRA Modified national points standings. Despite mechanical troubles last week, Mark Zorn still holds the second spot in the track standings.
Alan Barton won his first feature at Thunderhill since 2002 in the USRA Stock Car division. Barton is the fifth different winner in the Stock Cars this season. He managed to hold off point leader Leif Weyer, who holds a slight advantage in the point standings over his twin brother, Eric.
Waylon Banks is looking to continue his hot streak in the USRA Hobby Stocks, as he has taken over the track points lead and looks to become a contender in the USRA Hobby Stock national points standings. Banks has won four consecutive races, and six of the last seven feature events. Tim Patch, who has yet to visit victory lane, holds second in the standings.
This weekend's action will feature a special reduced pit pass price of $20. General admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for children 7-13, while ages 6 and under are admitted free. Hot laps begin at 7 p.m., with races starting at 7:30.
