Thunderhill readies for season opener
MAYETTA, Kan. -- Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, Kan., is set to kick off the 2006 regular racing season this Saturday, April 8. Three classes will race under the United States Racing Assocation (USRA) banner: USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars (formerly Factory Stocks) and USRA Hobby Stocks. All three USRA classes plus the Thundersprints and Superstocks will be in action to kick off the season.
Travis Patch will look to defend his first ever Modified title as well as win his sixth consecutive opening night race at Thunderhill. Patch dominated the class in 2005, and is eager to chase the USRA Championship as he plans to run at both Thunderhill and Humboldt Speedway. It is likely that a new driver will chase the championship in the Superstock class, as defending champ Mike Taylor will not attempt to win his second title in a row. Troy Baumgartner is the returning champ in the Factory Stock division, and Brian Labonte won the inaugural Hobby Stock championship. Danny Billings will try to defend the Thundersprint title coming into a season where the class will see nearly double the amount of races that they ran last year.
While spectator gates will open at 5, the pit gates will swing open at noon to allow enought time to ensure drivers are able to register their car and complete pre race inspection. Drivers who have not already completed registration or inspection are encouraged to arrive early. The drivers meeting will be held at 6:30, with hot laps starting and 7, and races starting at 7:30. Adult admission is $10, seniors are $8, children aged 7 to 13 are $5, and ages 6 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
