Inaugural Joe Berry B-Mod Showdown goes to Keller

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—Several top notch aces came to compete last night at Lakeside Speedway. When it was all said and done there were three happy winners in victory lane. Nobody was more excited than the winner of the first-ever Joe Berry B-Mod Showdown feature who went home with $1,500.

For the second straight week a whopping total of 45 USRA B-Mod drivers showed up to compete at Lakeside Speedway. The big cash loomed over the field as the night got underway.

Anytime you throw big money down you can expect anything and everything to happen once you get to the main event.

After picking up a heat race win earlier in the night, Shadren Turner started from the pole position. An extra five laps was added to the feature and all 20 laps would be needed before this one was decided.

Turner established himself as the early leader during the feature. Ethan Isaacs would try to keep pace but it would be Turner building a bit of a lead. As we found out last week it’s never over until it’s over.

While the race went on and several drivers were moving there way to the front, Isaacs began to eat away at Turner’s lead. Lap after lap Isaacs knocked off a few tenths until he was at Turner’s back door. A yellow flag gave Isaacs the chance he needed to take the top spot.

The restart saw the field bunched up once again and Isaacs finally was able to make his move and got around Turner for the top spot. As the two drivers hustled around the speedway was made between the two in turn 3. It was a catastrophic error for both drivers and both went from looking at a top-2 finish to being put at the back of the pack.

The final yellow of the night set up a dash to the finish.

Doug Keller inherited the lead as a pair of hot shoe Rage Chassis drivers, Mike Higley and Chad Clancy, were hot on his tail. The restart saw Keller take the top spot and Higley mounted the best threat to Keller in the final few laps. The two drivers went back and forth on the speedway but Keller maintained the advantage as Higley made one last bid for the top spot with a daring move that came up just shy of giving him the lead.

Keller held on and got his first win of the night. The inaugural Joe Berry B-Mod Showdown feature winner pocketed $1,500 and also became the 12th different feature winner on the season in the USRA B-Mod division.

The runner-up spot went to Higley, Clancy motored from 13th to third, Nick Newton found his way to fourth after starting 11th and rounding out the top 5 was last week’s winner, Eddie Schwope.

Heat race winners were Gene Claxton, Turner, Keller, Sam Schuler Jr. and Lance Lincoln. The B-features were won by Jay Bailey and Randal Schiffelbein Jr.

Aaron Marrant and Tad Davis brought the USRA Modified feature to the green flag. The race resembled a feature from last week: the ULMA Late Model feature.

Yes, it was a week ago that Aaron Marrant dominated the field in the Late Models and on Friday night looked to do the same in the USRA Modifieds.

Marrant battled early with Darron Fuqua, but Marrant figured out where his car was the best and then worked it to his advantage.

The race behind Marrant and Fuqua was a good one between Tim Karrick, Tad Davis, Kerry Davis and Terry Schultz.

During the last 10 laps. Fuqua put pressure on Marrant as the two traveled through lapped traffic, but a late-race yellow ended the duel at the front of the field.

On the restart Marrant took to the top spot and went on to the victory. The win was his second of the season in the USRA Modifieds and second win in two weeks at Lakeside Speedway.

Fuqua held on to the runner-up finish, Karrick got the better of a battle with the points leader, Kerry Davis, for third and fifth went to Tad Davis.

Heat race winners were Lance Town, Kerry Davis and Fuqua.

All season long it’s been a battle between the points leaders in the USRA Stock Car division, Brett Heeter and Kevin Anderson, on who will end the 2015 season with the most wins. A week ago Heeter logged win no. 9 while Anderson was stuck at eight.

Would the battle continue or would Heeter end it on this night?

Anderson gained the lead on lap 1 after starting outside the front row. A couple of X Factor Chassis teamates, Nate Barnes and John O’Neal Jr., gave a close chase.

Working lap 6 Anderson saw his lead evaporate as he almost looped his car in turn 4. Barnes and O’Neal quickly closed on the leader.

Lap 8 saw O’Neal take the top spot from Anderson, but it was short lived as Anderson motored back around O’Neal coming out of turn 2. The battle was a dandy.

In the final few laps Anderson asserted his dominance and streaked to his ninth win of the season, tying Heeter with the most wins in the division.

Barnes caught O’Neal in the final three laps and took second at the stripe. The hard charger was Heeter who went from 18th to fourth in the feature. Gene Stigall fought his way to a fifth-place finish.

Heat race winners on the night were O’Neal, Stigall and Steve Herrick.
