Panos, Weigert, Spilde tally victories at Upper Iowa Speedway
DECORAH, Iowa—The Upper Iowa Speedway saw three new faces in victory lane Saturday night for their second show of the season sponsored by Letter Werks Sign City of Decorah.
An excellent field of USRA Stock Cars were on hand on. Polesitter Lynn Panos jumped out to an early lead followed by Kyle Falck, Dillon Anderson and reigning track champion Mitch Hovden. As the lead pack separated from themselves from the field, Panos led a jockeying pack that battled for the remaining top five spots. Anderson made some ground on the top side as he rooster-trailed dirt along the wall, and the battle was on for second between himself and Falck.
Near the mid-race point, Hovden pulled off track with problems in his machine. This opened the door for Kevin Donlan and Derek Dettmann to battle for a top-five position. However, Panos hugged the inside lane and drove away for his first feature win of the season. Panos was followed by Falck, Donlan, Anderson and Dettmann.
Dan Hovden opened his 2015 campaign at the Upper Iowa Speedway last weekend with a dominant feature win. He started eighth in Saturday night’s show, but quickly found himself in second place chasing a fifth-starting Chris Weigert, who took over the top spot from Brent Bumgardner early in the feature race.
After a mid-race caution for a slowing car in the corner, Weigert again drove away from Hovden and the rest of the field. Hovden gained some ground on Weighert in the closing laps, setting up for an ultimate last-lap dash. Hovden drove the wheels off his USRA B-Mod on the outside, but it was Weigert on the inside who claimed his first win of the season. Hovden took home silver, followed by Matt Jones, Kyle Anderson and Jason Schlangen.
Scott Spilde saw his opening night in the USRA Hobby Stocks at the Upper Iowa Speedway go up in smoke last weekend. Unfortunately for Splide, he finished with a DNF on opening night. Spilde was able to recover from the botched opening night with an victory on Saturday.
Brady Link and Spilde broke away from the rest of field, but Spilde proved he was too fast for the Link’s machine. The feature race went green to checkered and it was Spilde who took home the trophy. Link took home runner-up honors followed by Steve Dwyer, 11th-starting Josh Ludeking and last week’s feature winner, Steve Larson.
