Gerlach guns down Midwest Mod field for first WISSOTA win

by Chris Stepan

KASSON, Minn. (June 24, 2001) - The Dodge County Speedway was back in action for the third time in 8 nights for a regular night of racing action featuring WISSOTA Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and IMCA Modifieds.

The Street Stock feature was the first main event on tap with Kevin Adams jumping out front from row one and never looking back. Adams got the lead and set off into the night on his way to picking up the win. Dan Gullikson and Arlen Diercks were engaged in a race long battle for second behind Adams, as were Greg Erickson and Steve Goodenough for fourth.

Gullikson stole second and began to pressure Adams for the lead while Jim Gustafson was making his way toward the front and appeared in third. Gustafson then slipped to the inside of Gullikson for second just past the half way point of the event and began to come after Adams, but Kevin was too strong and picked up the win ahead of Gustafson and Gullikson.

The Midwest Modifieds were up next and saw Carter Gerlach take command from the opening green flag and stretch his advantage with each lap until a mid race caution bunched up the field and put Greg Pfiefer on his rear bumper. On the restart, Pfiefer took a look to the inside of Gerlach as they raced into turn one, but Carter was too strong on the outside and blasted back out front.

Matt Madsen and Chad Herman were locked in a battle with Matt Stark for third behind the leaders as Gerlach and Pfiefer continued to run in a tight pack for the lead. Gerlach’s momentum on the high side would carry him back into the lead on each circuit. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Herman dispatched of Madsen, blew by Pfiefer and pulled up alongside of Gerlach for the top spot, which he took over for a lap before Gerlach regained his composure and went back to work on the high side. Gerlach then shot back into the lead with only a few laps remaining to pick up the popular win over Herman and Jim Arnold, who rallied from his 12th starting spot to finish third.

The Super Stock feature was a thriller as Dave Haberman and Kelly Anderson raced door to door for the lead over the course of the first 10 laps, while Bill Clemens and Mark Teske were swapping a bit of paint while running door to door for third the entire time as well.

Anderson and Haberman were putting on a show up front as were Teske and Clemens while Curt Myers was picking his way through traffic from his 10th starting spot and appeared in fifth on lap 8. Once Myers was in fifth, he quickly reeled in the lead pack and joined the battle up front.

Myers was running just behind Clemens and Teske when the two southern Minnesota drivers made contact with each other, allowing Myers the opportunity to blast by both of them into third. Myers then wasted no time at all coming after the leaders as they continued their side-by-side battle for the top spot.

Once Myers caught the leaders, he dove from the top of turn four straight to the bottom of the speedway and bolted by both Anderson and Haberman into the lead, which he would never relinquish. Myers then extended his advantage over Anderson, who finally snared second away from Haberman. Myers went on to win his 6th main event of the season over Anderson and Haberman.

The IMCA Modifieds were the final event of the night and Bobby Sorensen took the lead from the inside of the second row at the start and after several turn one cautions, Sorensen took off into the night, leaving Dean Reiss and Darwyn Karau to battle with each other for second. Reiss stole the spot and began to track down Sorensen, while Mike Sorensen and Brad Waits were making their way through traffic as well.

On a lap 12 restart, Mike Sorensen got the jump on Reiss and nabbed second. He then quickly pulled alongside of Bobby Sorensen and began to hound him for the lead. Several more cautions broke up what could have been a very exciting battle between the Sorensen boys, but when the race was running under green they battled very hard with each other for the lead, which Bobby would hold to the checkered for his first win of the season. Mike would have to settle for second ahead of Reiss.

Racing action resumes at Dodge County this Sunday with the Modified feature paying $1,000 to win sponsored by Andy’s Liquor. The first green flag is set to fly at 7pm.
