HUMBOLDT, Kan.—The 2014 campaign for the USRA Iron Man Challenge kicked off Friday night at the Humboldt Speedway with one first-time winner and one many-time winner walking away with the winner’s trophies.

In the full-fendered feature, the top three finishers were a who’s who of USRA Stock Car racing.

Two-time USRA national champion and 2012 Iron Man Challenge champ Tom Schmitt of Independence, Iowa, picked up a $750 paycheck  as he bested a short but stout field in the division’s debut at Humboldt.

Defending Iron Man titlist and former national champion Mitch Hovden came home second with 30-year veteran Steve Jackson finishing third.

Chanute’s Tyler James was fourth, followed  by Steve Herrick, Philip Wernert, Jim Powell, Kevin Donlan, Jeremy Wilson and David Matlock.

Tom Schmitt won the Iron Man Challenge USRA Stock Car feature.

The victory celebration in the USRA B-Mod main event was temporarily enjoyed by another veteran racer.

Steve Muilenburg of Sparta, Mo., held off Logan Martin in a fun-filled 20-lap feature race, but USRA officials were forced to disqualify Muilenburg for an unapproved distributor discovered during post-race technical inspections.

That gave the $600 winner’s share of the prize money and a career-first win to Martin—just in time for his 18th birthday coming up two weeks from now.

Jake Richards was credited with second place, Bryan Rigsby was third Dakota Foster finished fourth and Minnesota long-tow Jacob Bleess took fifth.

Ethan Isaacs, Andy Bryant, defending Iron Man Challenge champion Cory Crapser, Dan Wheeler and Jared Timmerman rounded out the top 10.

Action continues at the 3/8-mile clay oval on Saturday. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30 and racing starts at 7 p.m.
