Hess, Schroeder win USRA B-Mods mains, Dann nips Kennedy for track championship at I-90 Speedway
It was a bittersweet victory for Dudley Schroeder Jr. Although he got his first USRA B-Mod win of the season Saturday at the I-90 Speedway, his engine blew after the checkered flag.
HARTFORD, S.D. -- Season Championship night at the I-90 Speedway provided opportunities to enjoy a bigger night than normal for some drivers. A partial rain-out last week forced double features for the USRA B-Mods.
Not lost in all the excitement was the USRA B-Mod season championship battle between Tim Dann and Dave Kennedy. Dann entered the night with a slim four-point lead.
Dudley Schroeder Jr. nursed his car to victory lane in the first feature. He led all 15 laps but concerns grew as smoke poured from his car over the final laps. In victory lane, Schroeder said, "I'm pretty sure it's blown. It's done." Schroeder put a positive spin on the situation, however, stating that one of his goals for 2013 was to win a feature at I-90 Speedway.
Cameron Vande Weerd had been gaining on Schroeder but ran out of time in posting a second-place finish. Polesitter Nick Barger managed a third place finish in a back-up car that he worked on all week. It was the age old story of pulling a car out of the weeds and spending long nights getting it together for race night. His regular car was detroyed a week earlier at Huset's Speedway.
Meanwhile, Dann finished seventh, one position better than Kennedy. Dann's lead was six points heading into the final points race of the year.
The second USRA B-Mod feature saw Alec Vanden Brink lead the first four laps. At the same time all eyes were on Dann and Kennedy who were rarely more than a car apart during the A-Main. Brock Hess assumed the lead on the fifth lap and cruised to his third win of the season while Dann and Kennedy both moved up considerably from their starting positions. Kennedy crossed the finish line in third behind Tyler Tesch. Dann was right behind Kennedy in fourth. Kennedy was only able to gain four points in the feature giving Dann the track title by just a two-point margin.
Brock Hess assumed the lead on the fifth lap and cruised to his third win of the season.
I-90 Speedway hosts the Chili Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 21, for the last races of the year. Hot laps begin at 2:30 p.m. with racing at 3 p.m. Race teams can also enter the Chili Challenge cookoff. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded for the top three in judging. For more information go to www.i90speedway.com.
