King of America III practice moved to Thursday morning
HUMBOLDT, Kan. -- Practice for King of America III Modified Nationals has been postponed until 9 a.m. Thursday morning to allow drying in the pit area. The track is in great shape, but pits are still a bit soupy.
Gates will open at 8 a.m. Thursday morning. Only drivers practicing will be allowed into pits at that time, and they can buy pit passes at that time for both practice and Thursday night's racing. Drivers not practicing can enter the pits at 2 p.m.
Drivers are reminded not to park on the highway entering the track as the local authorities can and will ticket you. All other times and details remain the same … see you at the Humboldt Speedway!
All systems are “go” for the King of America III Modified Nationals this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 28-30, at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan.
Festivities kick off on Thursday with an open practice from 9-11 a.m. The crown jewel event will culminate on Saturday night with a 100-lap main event for the USMTS Modifieds that pays $10,000 to win and $1,000 to start.
Last year’s USMTS Rookie of the Year Stormy Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., is the defending champion of the event, and one of 126 drivers currently entered for this blockbuster event at ‘The Hummer.’ Nine-time USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock won the inaugural race in 2011.
Each driver will race in two heat races on Thursday and two heat races on Friday. Drivers will draw for their initial heat race starting position on Thursday, and will be inverted for the second, third and fourth heat races with varied starting spots and competitors in each. Each heat race will feature 10 or more starters and will be 10 or more laps, giving drivers the chance to advance as much as possible The USMTS passing points system will be used for all heat races and combined over the two days to determine line-ups for Saturday’s events.
In addition to dual qualifying races on Thursday and Friday, there will be two special events each night. On Thursday, the top 12 in passing points from 12 different states will have the opportunity to compete in a 12-lap Race of States. Friday night will feature the USRA Race of Champions which is open to all USRA Modified track champions from the 2012 season and past USRA Modified national champions.
To top it off, the Iron Man Challenge for USRA B-Mods will join the party with a complete program of heat races and feature events all three nights. USRA B-Mod drivers will be racing for $500 to win Thursday with a whopping $2,000 top prize posted for Friday and $1,000 to the winner on Saturday.
Thursday morning’s test ‘n’ tune session will be the only opportunity for hot laps for the USMTS Modifieds. Admission to the grandstands is free. Pit passes are $20. Pit gates will open at 8 a.m.
On Thursday and Friday afternoon, pit gates will open at 3 p.m., grandstands open at 5, the drivers meeting is at 6:15, hot laps for USRA B-Mods is at 6:45 and the first heat race will follow. All times are one hour earlier on Saturday.
Three-day reserved seat tickets are on sale now for just $50 for adults, $30 for youth ages 13-16 and $15 for kids ages 6-12. Single-day tickets for grown-ups are $20 on Thursday and Friday, $25 on Saturday. Youth get in for $10 each day and kids are just $5. Children ages 5 & under get in for free every day.
