Willis wires USRA Western Flyer HotMod field in Baytown finale
BAYTOWN, Texas -- Veteran Howard Willis took full advantage of his pole position Saturday night, leading all 20 laps to win the main event for the USRA Western Flyer HotMods on the final night of the 6th Annual Texas Winter Nationals presented by Ron Craft Cadillac-Chevrolet.
It was the third victory at the track under the USRA banner for Willis, who earned $700 for his efforts.
Another Lone Star State veteran racer, Paul White, chased Willis throughout the contest but had to settle for the runner-up paycheck at the finish.
Travis Johnson came from seventh to finish third, while USMTS stand-outs Ryan Gustin, Steve Whiteaker Jr. and John O. Whittington took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
The rest of the top 10 spots were filled with drivers competing exclusively in the USRA Western Flyer HotMod division. Jason Tiner powered his way from 18th on the starting grid to finish seventh, with Curtis Allen, Kevin Sitton and J.J. Jennings rounding out the top 10.
Saturday’s checkered flag put the wraps on a memorable 2012 campaign. The 15th season for the USMTS begins in three months – right back here at the Royal Purple Raceway for the 4th Annual Texas Spring Nationals, Feb. 21-23, 2013, with USRA Western Flyer HotMods once again joining the racing card.
