BANKS, Ore. -- After all of the foul weather that had postponed the 2012 season opener fans of the Sunset Speedway Park were glad to get some racing in last Saturday, May 12. Clint Petty of St. Helens led the 40-lap feature the entire way to become the first USRA Modified feature winner at the Banks facility for the season. It was not a cakewalk for Petty as he had to hold off the likes of Mark Reser of Tigard and Albany chauffer Brett James.

Petty maneuvered his Aloha Overhead Door/Finish Line Technologies #42 in lapped traffic and almost lost the lead with less than ten laps to go to earn his first win since 2003. The MNT Transport/Waste Management #21 of Mark Reser managed to hold off the James Gang Pizza #26 of Brett James for second place despite James’ efforts to make a daring move to gain the position.

In the first half of the race Brett James and Vancouver, Wash.’s Chris Quinn put on a great battle for third but once James made the pass complete the Dancin Bare #23 found he was battling with Crawfordsville driver Tom Yeack in his Mountain View Woodworking #49 and also the KFM Racing/VP Braille Services #57. By the end of the race Kenny Miller had achieved the pass on Chris Quinn fourth place in the closing laps to earn the finishing position and Quinn completed the top five finishers.

Fast time of the evening was Kenny Miller at 16.772 seconds out of the 26 qualifiers. Heat race winners were the Bullet Proof Racing/Jacobus Carstar #50 Sonny Sayre from Vancouver, Wash., Chris Hallberg in the Discount Race Car Parts #01 and Chris Quinn while Jeremy Martin of Warren won the trophy dash in his Reser’s Fine Foods #99. There was a 15-lap consolation which was won by Doug Davenport of Vernonia in his X-Factor Race Cars #8D machine and brought with him as transfers Craig Hanson of Albany in the Virgil Hanson Automotive Machine #33C, Russell Schultz of Vancouver, Wash., in the GRV Mobile RV Parts and Repair #01X and the Dancin Bare #4D4 of Danny Daniels from Portland.

The Sunset Speedway Park is located just west of the Portland metro area in Banks on the Sunset Highway.
