Another smashing USRA Modified feature at Grays Harbor

ELMA, Wash. -- Fans were once again not disappointed by the USRA Modifieds at the Grays Harbor Raceway on Saturday May 12th. It was the second race of the season for the classification and a bit of a repeat of the first race on April 28th in which a green-white-checker scenario decided the outcome. Scott Miller of Shelton managed to rally late, after losing the lead earlier, to place his Blue Bear Park/Blondie Restaurant #26 into victory lane for the first time this season.

A lap seven caution allowed the entire field to bunch up as Scott Miller labored his way to third place from his original sixth row starting position to find himself in a position to challenge the leader #44 of Del Schnitzer from Shelton. On the restart Miller made a pass above Schnitzer into turn number three to obtain the race lead. Miller would hold the lead until a lap twenty-one restart allowed the D&D Dyno/Sweatman Trucking/Mascso Petroleum #11X of Tom Sweatman from Cosmopolis to make the pass and look for the victory in his second career USRA Modified start.

Tom Sweatman would pace the field until defending champion Joe German of Aberdeen in the Power Train Application/CCS Industrial Services #75X made a pass on him out of turn two but the caution came out on lap twenty-eight which would set up the second straight green-white-checker situation for the USRA Modifieds in 2012. On the restart Sweatman retained the lead but Scott Miller went from fourth into second. Miller got the necessary run underneath Sweatman out of turn four coming to the white flag that Miller would over take him to lead the final lap of the race to win his first race of the season.

Tom Sweatman would finish in second place while Joe German finished in third. Former champion Craig Moore of Seabeck finished fourth in the #M14 D&C Competition Engines/Williams Family Salsa entry and fifth place would go to Morgan Criswell of Vancouver in the Westport Brewing Company/Shamus Brewing Company #9K.

Vancouver’s Don Jenner was quickest amongst the field in his Dancin Bare/Extreme Auto Repair #6X machine at a time of 16.801 seconds. Heat race wins were credited to Joe German, Tom Sweatman, and Scott Miller earlier in the evening as well.

The USRA Modifieds will be back in action next Saturday night on the speed factory 3/8-mile dirt oval. They will also be on hand for the Spring Showdown for both night alongside the ASCS Northwest Region which will be held on May 26th and 27th.
