BAYTOWN, Texas -- After coming up one spot short on Thursday night, Randy Timms drove to the winners circle Friday night as he captured the 20-lap USRA Western Flyer HotMod main event at the Royal Purple Raceway on the second of three nights at the quarter-mile clay oval in Baytown, Texas, for the 3rd Annual Texas Spring Nationals.

Timms started in the second row but quickly made his way to the front to earn the $600 winner’s share of the prize money. On Thursday, Timms finished second to Ryan Gustin and picked up an extra $100 for being the race’s Hard Charger after starting twelfth.

Tenth-starting John O Whittington took the runner-up spot Friday night with Kamron Campbell finishing third, Justin Collins fourth and Braydon Dodson in fifth.

Eric Cegielski came from 19th to sixth, with Thomas Downey, G.W. Hessong, Charlie Morrow and Derek Legg rounding out the top 10.

Legg came from 23rd on the starting grid to earn the $100 Hard Charger Award.

Campbell, Collins, Dodson, Cegielski, Downey also picked up bonuses of $150, $100, $75, $50 and $25, respectively, as the top five drivers not currently racing a USMTS Modified.

The USRA Western Flyer HotMods will again be racing in support of the USMTS Modifieds on Saturday night for $900 to win.

Saturday’ “Pure HotMod Awards” will be $200, $150, $100, $75, $50 and $25 to the top six non-USMTS racers, and there is also a Hard Charger Award worth $100 each night too.

A $100 bonus will be paid to any driver racing all three nights and not qualifying for the “A” Main on Saturday.

The pit gate opens Saturday at 2 p.m., grandstands open at 4 and the first heat race hits the track at 5:30.
