DECORAH, Iowa -- The Iron Man Challenge invaded the Upper Iowa Speedway Saturday night with a new winner emerging in the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods and a three-time winner in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars as the battle for the points title got even tighter.

After a handful of top-5 finishes this season, Josh Bonnstetter of Slayton, Minn., finally made his first trip to victory lane after a tough challenge from Norwalk’s Jared Timmerman in the B-Mod feature.

Polesitter Brian Schrage of Cresco took the lead at the drop of the green flag, but Bonnstetter chased him down from his seventh starting spot to snare the lead.

A few laps later, Timmerman got by the leader but Bonnstetter battled back to regain the top spot and go on to collect the $500 paycheck while Timmerman settled for the runner-up finish.

Troy Hovey of Decorah wound up third, points leader Matt Lettow of Roland finished fourth and Jason Schlangen of Cresco rounded out the top 5.

Making his tenth start this season, five-time winner Cayden Carter took sixth and closed in on Lettow in the points race. With just two events remaining, Lettow’s season-long lead is now only 15 points over Carter while Brandon Hare is 84 markers behind, but has competed in just nine events.

Points are awarded based on a driver’s 10 best nights, so the Iron Man Challenge title for the B-Mods is up for grabs.

In Saturday night’s Stock Car finale, Kevin Donlan collected his third Iron Man trophy of the 2011 campaign in front of his hometown fans, and pocketed $700 for his efforts.

Former three-time USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod National Champion Matt Jones of Waukon made his second start this year in the Iron Man Challenge and wound up with his second runner-up paycheck.

Another Decorah driver, Mitch Hovden came from the 11 starting spot to take third, with former USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car National Champion Tom Schmitt of Independence in fourth and Shawn Peter of Mable, Minn., fifth.

Missing in action Saturday night was points leader Mike Van Genderen, but the ‘Flying Dutchman’ remains atop the standings with two events to go. Justin Temeyer is 46 points back in second and defending Iron Man Challenge titleist Nathan Wood is 65 markers from the lead.

Donlan is currently fourth and 91 points behind Van Genderen, but has competed in just nine shows so far. With a solid top-5 finish in the next event, Donlan will become a factor in the points race.

The next-to-last Iron Man Challenge race of the season takes place this Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn., before wrapping up the 2011 campaign on Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa.

At both venues, Stock Cars will be racing for $700 to win and $125 to start while B-Mods will compete for a $500 top prize and $80 to start. Tow money for non-qualifiers will be $75 and $50, respectively. Stock Cars will have a $25 entry fee while the B-Mod entry fee is $15.

Nineteen dates at fourteen dirt ovals in four states comprise the 2011 schedule for the second season of the Iron Man Challenge. Points for both classes will be awarded based on a driver’s 10 best nights.

Licensed USRA drivers in both classes also earn national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series, and some tracks may also award track points.

The Iron Man Challenge points fund for the Stock Cars carries a $2,000 top prize with the tenth-place finisher earning $200. In the B-Mod class, the points champion will earn $700 with tenth taking home $100.
