EL PASO, Texas -- Menacing clouds may have hung in the west Texas sky, but the breeze was moving in favor of dirt track action on Friday night at the El Paso Speedway Park as the USRA RHS Modifieds headlined the night's racing.

Kevin Clark set the pace to the green in the A-Main but it was Roger Owens rocketing into the race lead. Stalked by Royal Jones and Jimmy Ray, it was a three-car battle for the lead to start things off. Five laps into the night’s 20-lap main event, the top three separated themselves by over a straight-away as Christy Georges worked into a distant fourth.

Applying more and more pressure on Owens for the race lead, Jones got the break he needed with 13 laps to run as Owens bobbled the high line. Falling to third, Owens looked to be getting tighter and tighter as the car refused to roll the corners, allowing Georges to sneak by for third before Stormy Scott shot by to drop Owens to fifth.

Rolling nice and smooth, Ray worked all over the back bumper of Jones, waiting for his chance to strike. As the fight for the lead raged on, the fight for third saw a huge slide job on the part of Scott. Dropping Georges back to fourth, Scott found himself still at a big disadvantage as the final laps put Jones and Ray over a straight-away ahead.

Into the final lap, Jones saw his advantage start to fade as lapped traffic again became a factor but it would not be enough to deny him the win. Ray, Scott, Georges and Owens rounded out the top 5.

Heat race wins went to Ray and Tom Georges.

Up next at the El Paso Speedway Park will be the return of the USRA Western Flyer HotMods on Friday, Aug. 5. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing getting underway at 7:45. Admission will be $10 for adults. Kids ages 11-15, members of the military, seniors, law enforcement personnel and university students getting in for $7 while children 10 and under get in for free.
