EL PASO, Texas -- It was more than a race on the track Friday as the El Paso Speedway Park also had a race against the weather to consider with the radar showing patches of rain all around the 3/8-mile clay oval.

Heat races in the USRA Western Flyer HotMods went by in a flash with Rob Madrid and Paddy Rush scoring wins. The night’s trophy dash also went to Rush.

The USRA Western Flyer HotMods rolled to the racing surface for a 15-lap event with Rush taking advantage of his pole position to show the way. After starting fifth on the lineup, the inside line opened wide for Sherman Barnett, who shot to second in a matter of laps. Working on Rush for the lead, Barnett worked the track to a diamond to build momentum to steal away the lead.

With his car starting to tighten up, Rush was unable to keep pace, falling to third after a brief battle with Madrid.

Back to fourth the battle was between Christy Georges and Patrick Carney. Working the inside line, Carney pulled wheel to wheel with Georges several times but it would be Georges holding the position.

Starting to run down Barnett, Madrid made the leader earn it as the final laps pitted the two drivers in a fierce battle for the lead with Barnett holding on to win while Madrid, Rush, Georges and Carney rounded out the top 5.

Up next at the El Paso Speedway Park will be the return of the USRA RHS Modifieds on Friday night, July 29. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing getting underway at 7:45. Admission will be $10, with kids ages 11-15, military, seniors, law enforcement and university students getring in for $7 while children 10 and under get in the grandstands for free.
