Carney cashes in again at El Paso Speedway Park

EL PASO, Texas -- As the pits were busy with activity, the fans of the El Paso Speedway Park were filling the grandstands this past Friday for the return of the USRA Western Flyer HotMods on the 3/8-mile clay oval.
Heat race wins went to Austin Adams and Michael Gonzales, while the trophy dash winner was Rob Madrid.
The USRA Western Flyer HotMods started the night's "A" Mains with 20 laps on the scoreboard. Leading from the pole, Gonzales had to fight not once but twice for the lead as the caution waved for Bucky Blaze on the initial start. To the green, Gonzales again had the jump over Duane Murphy on the front row with Alex Gonzales working on Murphy for second.
Fighting from the ninth starting position, Patrick Carney tested the limits of his car, going three wide though traffic to break into the top five within the first 10 laps of racing. Still with a commanding lead, Michael Gonzales looked to be on easy street as the battle for second heated up between Murphy, Alex Gonzales and Carney.
With 10 laps to go, Carney again thrilled the fans going three wide, running up the middle to go from fourth to second. With nine laps to go, Michael Gonzales held a half straight-away advantage but Madrid took over third and began working on Carney for second as they ran down Gonzales for the lead.
Side by side with five laps to go, Carney stole the top spot and pulled away as Madrid worked into second in the closing laps but was not able to run down Carney. Madrid, Michael Gonzales, Christy Georges and Duane Murphy rounded out the top five.
